As part of the Faena Arts program, renowned designer Es Devlin has installed “Library of Us” on the beachfront of the Faena Beach hotel in Miami Beach, creating a striking new cultural space during Miami Art Week.
This rotating, compass-like library sits on a metallic plinth, featuring a triangular shelf that rotates over a circular pool of water, complemented by a circular reading desk and chairs. The 2,500 books are spaced to allow light through and are illuminated at night, adding an immersive visual element during Art Basel’s busy week.
Inspired by communal reading and social connection, Devlin designed the installation to mirror the vibrancy of libraries as active, social gathering places. She states, “Libraries are places where imaginations soar—clutched like kites—and this installation aims to foster interactions among viewers through language and shared experiences.”
Each day, Devlin presents a curated selection of books, offering a tranquil escape amidst the art week’s bustling energy. An LED screen displays phrases from the books, accompanied by audio readings, amplifying the communal storytelling experience.
In celebration of Faena Art’s 10th anniversary, Devlin also added a reading room at Faena Beach, with plans for the books to be donated to local libraries after the week.
Library of Us is on view now through December 7 at Faena Beach as part of Miami Art Week.
