Capsule, the Milan-based curatorial platform redefining radical design, is thrilled to announce its latest exhibition, “Memphis Miami,” presented in partnership with Basic.Space. Running from December 2 to 8 in the vibrant Miami Design District, the event celebrates a unique collaboration between the iconic Italian design brand Memphis Milano and the energetic American artist Katherine Bernhardt, known for her dynamic paintings and passion for Memphis design.
This immersive pop-surrealist experience features Memphis’ legendary design pieces alongside an exclusive, limited-edition series of hand-woven rugs by Bernhardt, each crafted in Nepal and available in a run of just nine pieces. Drawing inspiration from the Radical Design movement of the 1960s, the Memphis Group—founded by Ettore Sottsass in 1980—merged pop culture with high art in a bold aesthetic that balances kitsch and elegance. Bernhardt’s own work mirrors this ethos, as she playfully subverts consumer symbols drawn from Americana, incorporating motifs like watermelons and Cookie Monster into her designs.
The exhibition space, awash in a bubblegum pink reminiscent of Miami’s Pink House designed by Arquitectonica, reflects Bernhardt’s artistic vision, as she has also embraced this hue in her St. Louis villa and “Pink Panther” series. Visitors will encounter Memphis classics such as the Carlton bookshelf and Tahiti lamp, created by Sottsass, as well as Michele De Lucchi’s Flamingo coffee table and Riviera chair, and works by notable designers Marco Zanini, Martine Bedin, and Nathalie Du Pasquier.
In addition to these iconic pieces, attendees can explore the latest issue of Capsule magazine and a selection of exclusive Memphis Miami apparel, available both at the exhibition and online via Basic.Space. Complementing the exhibition, Bernhardt will showcase new paintings inspired by Memphis at David Zwirner Gallery and Canada during Art Basel Miami Beach.
Founded in 2022, Capsule melds insights from interiors, architecture, fashion, and technology to challenge and expand the concept of radical design for contemporary audiences.
