Pedro Pablo Oliva, born in Pinar del Río, Cuba in 1949, specializes in painting, drawing, and sculpture. He studied painting at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, an institution he graduated from in 1970. He has held more than twenty personal and collective exhibitions, and his pieces grace collections in Spain, Italy, France, the United States, Brazil, Switzerland, Mexico, Canada, Germany and Cuba.
Oliva created the “Young Woman Condemned to Living with a Rock on Her Head” sculpture series to express the conflicts of human beings who have both dreams and problems. In recognition for his promotion of the arts and Cuban culture, he was awarded the National Prize for Fine Arts in 2006, the most prestigious award granted to artists in Cuba.
