Dentata Pendant Empowers Women’s Reproductive Rights
In the midst of ongoing debates surrounding women’s reproductive rights, a new piece of jewelry has surfaced that is making waves in the fashion world. The Dentata Pendant, designed by New York-based artist Andreas Leoussis, draws inspiration from the urban legend of toothed female genitalia.
While the controversial topic may be unsettling for some, Leoussis sees it as a way to empower women and pay tribute to the feminist movement. “We wanted to create an empowering, yet fashionable, ring and we believe we succeeded,” he says. “The pieces feel like a fun dirty secret, granting power only to those that recognize the symbol.”
Not only do the Dentata pieces make a bold statement, but they also contribute to a greater cause. 10% of each sale will be donated to Her Justice, an organization dedicated to assisting impoverished women in New York City by providing free legal help.
In addition to their charitable efforts, KIL N.Y.C., the brand behind the Dentata collection, is also environmentally conscious. Their signature sustainable packaging is made from post-consumer recycled paper and features algae-based inks. As a special touch, buried within the care card that accompanies the jewelry are wildflower seeds which bloom when planted.
It remains to be seen how the public will respond to the Dentata Pendant and its provocative design. Nevertheless, it highlights the ongoing conversation surrounding women’s reproductive rights and showcases one artist’s unique interpretation on the matter.
Styled on an 18 inch chain, the Dentata Pendant shows this spiky design laid flat, creating a teardrop shape to elongate the neck. TheDentata Ring features the same spiky design, curved around the finger, mimicking the way the chastity belt would have been worn. Both styles are made-to-order in customer’s choice of sterling silver, 18k yellow gold over sterling silver, or 14k yellow gold.
