Borscht Film Festival

BORSCHT 0

NOVEMBER 15-24, 2019
Ten days of participation in new futures and majesty, rising in glory, to dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.

This year Borscht is doubling in size, expanding from a five day festival to ten. Today we announce the “light” half of our schedule, local-centric programming with a particular spotlight on the next generation of Miami filmmakers that will take the organization and city into the future.

Tickets are now available for these events and seating is limited!

NITE OWL: FIREBIRD RESURRECTION
5:30 PM @ NITE OWL: FIREBIRD
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH
$FREE WITH OPENING NIGHT TICKET
The Nite Owl was the best independent theater in Miami until it was unceremoniously shut down a few months ago. We’re bringing it back as a pop-up that will serve as the home base for our festival this year. Have a drink to celebrate.

WIND ACROSS THE EVERGLADES
7:30 PM @ NITE OWL: FIREBIRD
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH
$10 TIX
Our festival begins with a wild vision of Old Miami in Nicholas Ray’s Wind Across the Everglades (1958). The classic film is about a well-intentioned ornithologist in frontier town Miami who battles a gang of outlaw bird poachers led by the fanged Burl Ives and his pet cottonmouth snake.

EL BAUTIZO (THE BAPTISM)
10 PM @ NITE OWL: FIREBIRD
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH
$10 TIX
Our opening night shorts showcase the voices of new Miami redefining the city’s history for themselves with stories featuring antebellum aliens, three headed serpents battling Ponce de Leon, a psychedelic trip to Lion Country Safari, a feminist reimagining of Fellini’s 8 1/2, and more.

When Borscht died, we started a Fellowship program as an experiment to see what would happen if we roughly recreated the conditions around the initial creation of Borscht, with a younger group of artists.

Tonight we baptize the new and future Miami storytellers in the first of several programs featuring an entirely new generation of young Miami filmmakers.

LOT 11 GRAND OPENING
11 AM @ LOT 11 SKATE PARK
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH
$FREE
A highway underpass is reborn as a skate park. We join the Skate Free nonprofit to celebrate the grand opening of Lot 11 by giving away merch and gifts onsite.

FCAT FEST
7 PM @ NITE OWL: FIREBIRD
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH
$10 TIX
Short films by the new generation of Miami filmmakers include drag queen witchcraft, anthropomorphized croquettas, sex worker struggles, and the artiest movie ever shot in Hialeah.

These films are selections from the three collectives that sprung from the Borscht Fellowship Program: Aborschtions, Bisque, and Just Spam.

PERROS CALLEJEROS
9 PM @ NITE OWL: FIREBIRD
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH
$10 TIX
Perros Callejeros is a work-in-progress feature film by Chris Campa, developed through the fellowship program. Shot on 16mm, it is a portrait of youth set in Miami—an expression of teenage nihilism, uncertainty, naiveté and recklessness in a mix of paradise and hellhole. Following a group of friends as they roam through the city over the course of one night, Amari finds himself forced to confront being alone and navigating his future.

PERREO CALLEJERO PARTY
11 PM @ 1036 N MIAMI AVE
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH
$FREE WITH TICKET TO PERROS CALLEJEROS
Ring, ring, la calle me llamo. It’s an all reggaeton dance party, como siempre, except this time, we’re in a warehouse donde trabaja tu tío.

*~*boiler room/rave/marquesina vibes`*~*

This special edition perreo is the after party to the Perros Callejeros Premiere.

Free entry with purchase of ticket to the Perros Callejeros Premiere.

BORSCHT JR.
2 PM @ NITE OWL: FIREBIRD
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17TH
$PAY WHAT YOU WANT
Family friendly program curated by 5 year old Sabrina Meza-Valdes. We don’t know what she will be playing but her taste is infallible.

LEAVE THE BUS THROUGH THE BROKEN WINDOW
7 PM @ NITE OWL: FIREBIRD
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH
$10 TIX
Miami native and co-producer of Moonlight Andrew Hevia returns to the festival he helped start to screen his feature film debut. A few years ago, Andrew went to Hong Kong to make a documentary about their art scene. He ended up making a doc about his own heartbreak and loneliness that has been called “poignant,” “incredibly entertaining” and “wonderfully magical.”

HARMONY KORINE SELECTS
7 PM @ NITE OWL: FIREBIRD
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH
$PAY WHAT YOU WANT
Nick Katz (Andrew Skate Shop) and Miami’s foremost auteur (forgive us Michael Bay) Harmony Korine picked some short videos to play. We haven’t seen them yet but they are probably good. You can watch the movies or roll around in Nick’s new skate park a few blocks away but probably not both, at least not at the same time.

BORSCHT 0 MAIN NIGHT
6:30PM @ THE ARSHT CENTER
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22ND
$10 TIX

Our flagship showcase is the heart of the festival: a mammoth screening of short films specifically commissioned for this festival made in/for/about Miami by local and guest filmmakers. In years past, these fresh Miami stories have gone on to become feature films, play at Sundance and hundreds of other fests, and become viral sensations. See films in the city they were made for, before anyone else.

For its 11th iteration, we are happy to co-present the event with the Adrienne Arsht Center. Arrive early to catch a special large-scale puppet performance by Poncili Creacion and other surprises.

BISQUETOPIA
6:30PM @ THE SCOTTISH RITE TEMPLE
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21ST
$10 TIX

BISQUETOPIA is the first major event by bisque corp, (a collective of young Miami filmmakerS that sprung from the Borscht Fellowship Program) wherein they take over the Scottish Rite Temple with large scale inflatables, shrines to inscrutable deities, costumed digital rituals, a musical performance by DJ Douggpound, and screenings of short films they made over the past year.

BISQUE CORP PRESENTS A CELEBRATORY SYMPOSIUM OF MOVING IMAGE, DIRECT FROM THE DMS. THE BABYWAVE IS COMING…

BISQUETOPIA: an iMAX vine comp representing the paramount essence of today’s scorching cognitive media puzzle. The day we were born we sold out.

Come to watch, leave to die. We will all be dust, but right now we’re a family. Borscht crawled and died so we could run & we haven’t looked back since.
