Art Basel in Miami Beach, Lead Partner UBS, December 1-4, 2016
‘WOMEN: New Portraits’, an exhibition of newly commissioned photographs by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz will open in San Francisco on March 25, 2016,  in The Presidio’s Crissy Field at 649 Old Mason Street, a former army training facility. Access to the exhibition is free and advance booking online is recommended.

‘WOMEN: New Portraits’ is a continuation of a project that Leibovitz began over fifteen years ago when her most enduringly popular series of photographs, ‘Women’, was published in 1999 in collaboration with Susan Sontag. The new portraits feature women of outstanding achievement including artists, musicians, CEOs, politicians, writers and philanthropists. In addition to the new photographs, the exhibition includes work from the original series, as well as other unpublished photographs taken since.

The U.S. premiere will be marked by the launch of ‘Women for Women’, a UBS program on March 23 with a discussion between Annie Leibovitz and leading feminist writer and political activist, Gloria Steinem. Activating the exhibition’s Talking Circle, the ‘Women for Women’ program of events will accompany the international exhibition tour through 2016.

Annie Leibovitz said: “When I asked UBS about updating the WOMEN’s project there was no hesitation. They said let’s do it, and they have been extraordinary in every way. It is such a big undertaking and a broad subject, it is like going out and photographing the ocean.”

Tom Naratil, President Wealth Management Americas, and President UBS Americas, said: “This partnership is a great fit for UBS. As the largest wealth manager in the world, many of our clients are the most successful leaders in their industries, and so it seemed natural to partner with Annie, whose career and distinguished body of work is unrivaled among today’s portrait photographers. We are delighted to be launching our U.S. tour in San Francisco, where Annie studied, and to be collaborating on a project that showcases and celebrates women who are at the top of their fields.”

To align with their focus on education, UBS is hosting free learning programs to complement the exhibition in each of the host cities, presented in partnership with cultural organizations around the world. In San Francisco, UBS is partnering with San Francisco Art Institute, at which Leibovitz studied in the late 1960’s, to present free family workshops for the duration of the exhibition run and on a special preview for photography students. UBS and the Presidio Trust are collaborating on a program of school field trips. A Teachers’ Guide produced in partnership with the International Center of Photography in New York and a Children’s Activity Guide are also available to teachers and the public on the exhibition website.

A set of the new photographs will enter the UBS Art Collection – one of the world’s most important corporate collections of contemporary art, comprising more than 30,000 works.
