Water Radio and O, Miami present: Reading Camp

9/4, 10/2/, 11/6, 12/4, 1/8

FIU Biscayne Bay Campus
3000 Northeast 151st Street
Biscayne Bay Campus Recreation
North Miami, FL

Join O, Miami and Fereshteh Toosi for a literary night ride on Biscayne Bay! They are hosting group readings of poetic and lyrical texts on the water. Unlike a traditional book club, the Reading Camp does not require homework. During each group poetry reading, we cast off the isolation of this ordinary activity.

Plan ahead for the upcoming Reading Camp gatherings on Wednesdays from 6-9 PM at BBC:

9/4, 10/2/, 11/6, 12/4, 1/8

This event is for ages 16+. We launch from the Biscayne Bay campus of Florida International University. Limited metered parking is available. Please consider carpool or bus options. Arrive early, bring a photo ID and meet us at the Recreation Center front desk at 6:45 in order to complete a waiver form.

Weather permitting, Reading Camp will conclude with a campfire and snacks. Each participant will also go home with a copy of the reading.

This event takes place on the ancestral homeland of Tequesta, Miccosukee, and Seminole people. Learn more about current issues and actions to protect the watershed here: https://www.lovetheeverglades.org/

Fereshteh Toosi’s art work involves embodied experiences, encounter, exchange, and sensory inquiry. She works as an Assistant Professor in the Art and Art History Department at Florida International University and directs the Nature Connection Arts Lab. http://fereshteh.net/

This project invokes the notion of radio as a listening and broadcast technology. How can we learn about a place, specifically Miami’s waterways, while situated directly in that place? How can we listen to what the earth is communicating to us, while also communicating in reciprocity? What happens when we read poetry aloud to/with/for other people, but also to an audience of the land and the sea? How do the mangroves respond to human authors? What kind of poetry does the ocean enjoy?
