ArtCenter/South Florida (“ACSF”) puts out the welcome mat for Home Work, an exhibition that spotlights artists-in-residence who have successfully completed their first year residency. As a broad theme offered by the organization, artists have been given carte blanche to create “Home Work.” From literal interpretations that comprise furniture and building materials to nonfigurative representations of family lineage, safe havens and domesticity, new artists-in-residence have embraced this concept in taking their place within ArtCenter’s vibrant, progressive community. Slated for Saturday, October 23, 2010 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., the reception will be at the 800 Lincoln Road gallery in Miami Beach.
Featured artists include W. Andre Allen, Anthony Ardavin, Wendy Coad, Alfonso Corona, Matu Croney, Jaime Gil Laffan and Beatricia Sagar. “ACSF’s residency program gives artists the opportunity to focus on their work and provides them with a level of visibility and sense of community that can’t be found anywhere else in South Florida,” said Jeremy Chestler, executive director of ArtCenter/South Florida. “This annual exhibit is an exciting time for us to introduce our visitors to ArtCenter’s newest group of resident artists and the work they’re doing here in our studios.”
Whereas Ardavin draws on his Cuban heritage to craft a piece about fond memories of a home that is no more, Corona built an installation called “Life Cage” based on his views of what humans resemble on Earth. Croney’s totem honors his family’s extensive military lineage, from his Great Grandfather who was an appointed bodyguard to King Edward VIII, to his sister serving in the U.S. Army currently deployed in Afghanistan. Sagar utilizes wallpaper as her muse, exploring the notion of environments through walls, interior and exterior spaces; while Coad paints a woman in the process of maintaining the home by vacuuming its fabrics.
Through the Juried Artist Program, ArtCenter offers subsidized studio space for individuals illustrating acute conceptual innovation and technical proficiency in their portfolios. After being invited into the program, artists have access to low-cost studios, numerous facilities, teaching and exhibition opportunities, career development and self-promotional tools. With ACSF’s buildings centrally located on Lincoln Road, artists-in-residence have the unique ability to benefit from a captive pedestrian audience year-round.
