Travel: Where to Go October 2019

Nantucket, MA

There’s no denying that Nantucket is the quintessential summer destination, but true insiders know that fall is when the island really shines. The population drops from 80,000 to 10,000 and lines dissipate at popular shops such as The Juice Bar, the beloved ice cream shop that churns out a homemade Pumpkin Spice flavor only available in the fall. Beachcombers can spread out across the island’s 82 miles of coastline, and food-lovers rejoice at the arrival of autumnal treats such as fresh, local cranberries and Nantucket Bay scallops. Don’t miss seasonal events like the family-friendly Cranberry Festival, October 12, 2019, which celebrates the island’s 162-year history with cranberry farming; and the Nantucket Half Marathon on October 13, 2019, which takes runners on a scenic route through sandy dirt roads, wooded trails, and ocean-front streets. Plus, rates at popular hotels like the newly renovated Wauwinet are lower than during peak summer months – rooms start at $225 per night.

Barcelona, Spain
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 48H Open House in Barcelona, which will be held October 26 and 27. During this architectural festival, more than 200 buildings open their doors to offer locals and travelers a unique (and sometimes rarely seen) look inside. The Festival is an opportunity to enjoy design-centric experiences related to the city’s history: from Roman ruins to contemporary architecture, with Catalan Gothic, Neoclassic, Modernist and Modern Style buildings all included in the program. It’s a way to explore and understand the value of well-constructed and -designed spaces that are normally closed to the public, as well as encourage dialogue between architects and citizens to improve knowledge of architecture and public urban spaces. Though travelers can visit all the buildings for free, 20 of them require advanced booking to avoid long lines. Almanac Barcelona , a new hotel in the heart of the Modernist neighborhood of Eixample Derecho, sits only minutes away from the main points of interest. Antoni Gaudi’s masterpieces of Casa Batllo, La Pedrera and the infamous Basilica de la Sagrada Familia are located within walking distance from the hotel; and travelers can enjoy the less trafficked Casa Amatller, Hospital Sant Pau, and Biblioteca Arús, all of which are within a mile from Almanac Barcelona. At the end of an enriching day, the Almanac’s Azimuth rooftop bar provides a nice respite.

For a front row vies of the action, andBeyond can set up a breakfast by the river; and photography enthusiasts can book the photographic safari vehicle, which comes with super zoom lenses and a plethora of camera gear to allow guests to get best picture of the spectacle.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin’s much-anticipated Museum of Literature (MoLI) will open in late September with a collection of James Joyce’s works, including the famous Copy No. 1 ofUlysses, and rotating exhibitions focusing on Irish writers, both well-known and unsung. Within walking distance is The Westbury, part of the Irish-owned Doyle Collection. The hotel is located on the edge of the city’s creative quarter, just off the pedestrian-only Grafton Street, one of Dublin’s most charming thoroughfares filled with boutiques and live music. While you’re there, be sure to check out the Bauhaus 100 exhibition at the National Gallery of Ireland before it ends on December 1. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, the gallery is displaying works from 45 avant-garde artists including Paul Klee, Max Beckmann, and Marc Chagall.
