THE WOLFSONIAN-FIU CELEBRATES ARCHITECTURE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE 2010 AIA NATIONAL CONVENTION

The Wolfsonian–Florida International University celebrates architecture and welcomes the 2010 AIA National Convention taking place in Miami June 10-12, 2010 by showcasing a selection of architectural materials from its holdings and hosting a book event on Miami architecture.

Throughout the summer, visitors to The Wolfsonian may enjoy—in addition to its ongoing exhibitions—The Grand Hotels of Schultze & Weaver, a new installation opening June 3, 2010 as part of the permanent exhibition, Art and Design in the Modern Age. The Grand Hotels of Schultze & Weaver features renderings, floor plans, drawings, and photographs of many of the firm’s luxurious hotels designed from1921-1931 in South Florida and New York. Items in the installation are drawn from The Wolfsonian’s extensive archive of drawings and other items produced by the renowned architecture firm, designer of landmark hotels including the Waldorf-Astoria in New York, the Breakers in Palm Beach, and the Miami Biltmore in Coral Gables. The exhibition, Unrealized Architecture, on view in the museum’s rare book and special collections library vestibule beginning May 27, 2010, explores the impact that unbuilt architectural projects have had on society and on other architects. Works on view include designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott, Frank Lloyd Wright, Hugh Ferriss, Vladimir Evgrafovich Tatlin, and many others.

In addition, The Wolfsonian will host a book talk for the newly published Miami Architecture: An AIA Guide Featuring Downtown, the Beaches and Coconut Grove, an overview and critical assessment of Miami’s built environment. The authors, Allan Shulman, Randall C. Robinson, Jr., and Jeff Donnelly, will be joined by photographer Robin Hill and map designer Ulises Peinado Eyherabide, in a discussion of their book.

The book talk takes place in the auditorium on Thursday, June 10 at 7:30pm, and is followed by a book signing in The Dynamo Museum Shop. The event is free for Wolfsonian members, members of the Florida International University community and students, and $10 for all others.
