Miami Theater Center (MTC) is proud to present The Two-Character Play, a dramatic production of the critically acclaimed, award-winning Broadway play by Tennessee Williams. The Two-Character Play will be presented on the MainStage, March 31st through April 24th, 2016.
Directed by Miami native and MTC Artistic Director Stephanie Ansin, MTC’s production of The Two-Character Play tells the story of brother and sister actors, who abandoned by their theater troupe, are forced to wrestle personal demons and professional challenges as sanity slips through their fingers. Faced with an audience expecting a performance, the siblings cling to their art, hoping it will shield them from total destruction. Their scenario begs the question – is their love for theater, and each other, enough to save them from their fate?
Preview weekend tickets for March 31st and April 1st are priced at $45 each. Opening Night tickets for April 2nd are $150 each and include the post-performance reception with the show’s cast and creative team. Performances take place Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., with Sundays at 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday performances at 10 a.m. will be free and open to high school students only. Tickets for Thursday through Sunday performances from April 3rd through April 24th are $45 each.
MTC’s The Two-Character Play is directed by MTC Artistic Director Stephanie Ansin, with costume, lighting, and set design by MTC Resident Artist Fernando Calzadilla. Production team includes Art Garcia (Technical Director), Naomi Zapata (Stage Manager), Lazaro Godoy (Movement Coach), and Maria Teresa Alvarado (Video Consultant), with original music and sound design by Alec Kreisberg.
The Two-Character Play will be performed by Edson Jean and Shira Abergel. Edson Jean played Pelayo & Juan Jose in A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings. Edson holds a B.F.A. in Theatre from New World School of the Arts. He wrote, directed, and starred in The Adventures of Edson Jean, which aired on HBO/HBOGO. Alongside local artist Joshua Jean-Baptiste, Edson recently won the ‘Project Greenlight’ Digital Series Competition to develop #Josh, a web-series about a young Haitian-American, as he moves on from the recent death of his mother and into the apartment of his sexually promiscuous cousin in Miami, Florida. His TV credits include: Barry Jenkins 2016 feature film Moonlight, Bloodline (Netflix); Ballers (HBO); and The Mark Gordon’s Company feature film, Arms and the Dudes. As one of the founding members of Lab9, a Miami theater collective, Edson has produced several works around the city in hopes of cultivating a fresh perspective on theater in Miami. Lab9’s production Them Beaux will play at MTC’s SandBox theater, April 29th, 2016, through May 14th, 2016, as part of MTC’s SandBox series.
Shira Abergel played Sally in MTC’s The Seven Year Itch, Alice in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Doctor #2/Fata Morgana/Princess Ninetta in The Love of Three Oranges. Shira is a multi-disciplinary performing artist whose work in theater has been honored with nominations from the Carbonell Awards for her ensemble acting work in Brothers Beckett & Savage in Limbo (Alliance Theatre Lab) and a Silver Palm win for her ensemble acting work in Savage in Limbo (Alliance Theatre Lab). Her regional theater credits include: I Only F*** Stupid Whores (Manhattan Repertory Theatre Off-off Broadway), The Donkey Show (the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts), Last of the Red Hot Lovers (Broward Stage Door), Death for Sydney Black (Empire Stage/ Thinking Cap Theatre), and her original shows Nictor/Nictoria (GableStage/Tower Theatre), and Appalachian Squall (Miami Light Project/The Adrienne Arsht Center) and more. She has also worked in dance theatre and performance art throughout the U.S. and Mexico with artists Ana Mendez, Rosie Herrera, Natasha Tsakos, Christina Pettersson, Jen DeNike, & Brody Condon. Shira’s work on film has been featured at the Borscht, Miami, Sundance and South by Southwest film festivals, and she has written, directed, and performed her own original shows with grants from Miami Light Project and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. Recently, Shira was awarded a Knight Arts Challenge Grant from the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation to create a traveling theater wagon that brings the performing arts to South Florida in a unique and unconventional way.
