In a resounding comeback after a six-year hiatus, the Clinton Global Initiatives (CGI) has returned with renewed vigor and determination. The recently concluded CGI 2023 Meeting witnessed the unveiling of over 160 ambitious commitments to action, tackling pressing concerns such as freedom of the press, climate change, Ukraine relief and reconstruction, the global refugee crisis, women and girls’ rights, LBGQT rights, and more. This formidable display of dedication and collaboration from both the public and private sectors signals a powerful promise for positive change on a global scale.

The CGI 2023 Meeting kicked off with an extraordinary conversation between President Bill Clinton, a founding member, and His Holiness Pope Francis. Despite being miles apart, their remote link served as a reminder of the importance of connecting and engaging with our global community. His Holiness, in his usual inspiring manner, encouraged everyone present to persevere and continue their tireless efforts to address the world’s most urgent challenges.

Since its inception, the Clinton Foundation, led by President Bill Clinton, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Clinton Foundation Vice Chair Chelsea Clinton, has made a profound impact on the lives of more than 500 million people worldwide. This astounding achievement highlights the relentless commitment of the Clintons and their unwavering dedication to making a tangible difference.

One of the highlights of the CGI 2023 Meeting was the launch of the Ukraine Action Network, which aims to provide support and aid to a nation facing immense challenges. As a tribute to her outstanding leadership, Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, was honored with the prestigious 2023 Clinton Global Citizen Award.

Under the theme “Keep Going,” the CGI 2023 Meeting program featured several noteworthy sessions. President Clinton engaged in a special conversation with His Holiness Pope Francis, delving into critical issues like climate change, the refugee crisis, the welfare of children, and the remarkable projects of the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital. Secretary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen held a fireside chat, exploring topics such as the care economy, the economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and U.S. foreign policy.

Moreover, Dr. Chelsea Clinton unveiled the CGI Women and Girls pillar, a momentous initiative aimed at achieving full equality and equity for women and girls worldwide. The event also dedicated a special session to the protection of journalists and freedom of the press, shedding light on the detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in Russia.

The impact of the CGI commitments is truly astounding. When fully funded and implemented, the 160 new Commitments to Action announced at CGI 2023 are expected to improve the lives of more than 285 million people across the globe. These commitments encompass job training and skills development, the creation of permanent jobs, increased access to primary care services, training for health workers, and significant funding to support innovation and entrepreneurship. Such comprehensive and collective efforts demonstrate the potential for real change and progress.

Looking back at the achievements since the CGI 2005 Meeting only amplifies the significance of these commitments. More than 385,000 people have received job training or skills development opportunities, over 10,000 physicians and health workers have undergone training to enhance healthcare services, and more than 300,000 full-time, permanent jobs have been created. Additionally, substantial strides have been made in reducing carbon emissions, supporting historically excluded communities and businesses, improving access to primary care services, and investing in regenerative and climate-smart agriculture.

The CGI 2023 Meeting has brought to the forefront the unwavering determination of global leaders, organizations, and individuals to propel positive change. The commitments made during this event have the potential to reshape lives and communities, inspiring hope for a brighter future. As we move forward, let us remember the resounding message of CGI 2023 – to “Keep Going” and make the world a better place for all.
