Nailya Alexander Gallery is pleased to announce a book signing for Alexey Titarenko’s new monograph The City is a Novel, published in September 2015 by Damiani editore. The City is a Novel, Titarenko’s first major publication, features over 140 photographs of his work in St. Petersburg, Venice, Havana, and New York. The book includes Titarenko’s autobiographical essay “City of Shadows,” as well as essays by curator, writer, and art historian Gabriel Bauret; Brett Abbott, curator of photography at the High Museum of Art; and Sean Corcoran, curator of prints and photographs at the Museum of the City of New York.

“The weight of history is alive in the oeuvre of Alexey Titarenko,” writes Corcoran in his essay about Titarenko’s New York series. “Beginning in the mid-1980s with images made in his hometown of Saint Petersburg, and later in work from Venice and Havana, the photographer has created visions of cities imbued with a sense of time…The location of each image, along with a craftsman-like approach to printing, are integral parts of the artist’s process that, when successfully combined, convey a sense of humanity in the continuum of past and present.”

Born in Leningrad, Russia, in 1962, Alexey Titarenko has lived and worked in New York since 2008. His photographs have been shown in over thirty solo exhibitions and over forty group exhibitions worldwide. His work can be found in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the George Eastman House; the Yale University Art Gallery; the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne; and the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg.
