Known for his symphonies and string quartets, Haydn’s D major Cello Concerto is part of a mystery that was not solved until 1951. It was thought that the Concerto was actually penned by its dedicatee, Anton Kraft, but the original manuscript score baring the composer’s signature was rediscovered just 58 years ago! With its leisured lyricism and lively finale, cellist Alban Gerhardt offers his undeniable power and poise to the piece. And in a fitting finale, hear the sighing bereavement and heart-wrenching harmonies of Brahms’ fourth and final symphony.
