MIAMI, FL November 4, 2009 – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County proudly announces TEL AVIV AT 100, a commemoration of the city of Tel Aviv’s 100th birthday. This centennial celebration of Tel Aviv, the first Hebrew city to be established in the modern era, will applaud the city’s great cultural successes and its cutting edge cultural life.
 
“We are honored to have the opportunity to bring the Jewish community and their friends together to celebrate such an iconic event as the centennial of Tel Aviv, a city that shares Miami’s own vibrancy, international attention and rich cultural appeal,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “We have selected the most distinguished Israeli artists in the world for this exceptional international festival. It’s a mitzvah to include the Tel Aviv Centennial celebration in our inaugural Masterwork Series.”
 
The festivities include a prestigious lineup of performances at the Adrienne Arsht Center from Israel’s most esteemed and influential performing artists- Idan RaichelTHE IDAN RAICHEL PROJECT, BATSHEVA ENSEMBLE, ISRAEL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND ITZHAK PERLMAN.
 
“Tel Aviv has become a cultural metropolis, a center of artistic experimentation and accomplishment, which reaches far beyond the borders of Israel to the international arts community at large,” said David Eden, artistic advisor for the series.   Tel Aviv began as a city of about 60 Jewish families seeking better living conditions in 1909, and has emerged as Israel’s main cultural, business and communications center.  The centennial festivities will observe this significant occasion in Israel’s history – the establishment of the city of Tel Aviv.

THE IDAN RAICHEL PROJECT

Under the visionary direction of Israeli dancer/choreographer Ohad Naharin, Batsheva has earned an international reputation for pushing the boundaries of dance with intense energy and rich sensuality. For their Adrienne Arsht Center debut, Batsheva will perform Deca Dance, a celebration of 10 years of Naharin’s work from its most extravagant to its most intimate and heartrending, “The dancers are remarkable!” (Village Voice)

In addition to the two main stage performances, the Adrienne Arsht Center will present to two dance master classes on Friday, December 4 led by members of the Batsheva Ensemble – a morning class for students from a local university and an evening class for the general public at 7:30 p.m. in the Peacock Foundation, Inc. ISRAEL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Violinist Pinchas Zukerman, “a musician of genius” (Yediot Acharonot, Tel Aviv), returns as both conductor and soloist with the Israel Philharmonic, generally considered one of the ten best orchestras in the world today. The program complements Haydn’s classical brilliance with the lush melodies of Tchaikovsky’s brooding and ecstatic Romeo and Juliet Overture. Award-winning Canadian cellist Amanda Forsyth (who is married to Zukerman) partners with him in two gems for cello and orchestra by the German romantic, Max Bruch.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest violinists of this or any era, 4-time Emmy and 15-time Grammy Award winner Itzhak Perlman returns to the Knight Concert Hall with a solo recital of audience favorites. “Itzhak Perlman wows the crowd… the applause was thunderous… for warmth of tone and generosity of spirit he remains without peer… An ambassador of the joys of music throughout his illustrious career…” (The Toronto Star)
