New Zealand’s Gemma New is one of the most exciting young conductors of our time. Don’t miss this chance to hear a rising star conductor take on the raw power and gorgeous melodies of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

Program
Coleman: Umoja
Barber: Cello Concerto
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5

With the foreboding opening theme of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, listeners are launched into a four-movement exploration of fate. Technically demanding with an abundance of lyricism, Samuel Barber’s Concerto finds its match in Alisa Weilerstein with her “ferociousness of artistic spirit” (New York Classical Review). Umoja—the Swahili word for unity—is Valerie Coleman’s anthem for our world today.

Tickets are available in-person at New World Center and online as a pay-what-you-wish live stream event with access for 72 hours after the concert.
