Studio Monkey Shoulder – a global music initiative spearheaded by Monkey Shoulder Whisky and Worldwide FM – which just crowned Miami queer creative collective Masisi as the very first winner of its $12K grant and mentorship program in the United States.
Known for its electrifying Black Caribbean nightlife events in the city, Masisi will be utilizing the Studio Monkey Shoulder grant to give back to the local mixed music community through the creation of the new “Masisi Radio” station in Miami. To celebrate this monumental win and the launch of the station, Studio Monkey Shoulder will be hosting a party for Masisi on Saturday, September 14th at Terrestrial Funk.

- Helmed by creative director Akia Dorsainvil, Masisi has emerged as the center of Miami’s black queer Caribbean culture, with a focus on reclaiming the identities, sexualities and boundaries of the community through the unification of the masculine and feminine.
- Known for its local nightlife events that provide a safe space for queer people of color, Masisi is evolving through the creation of the Masisi Radio station with Studio Monkey Shoulder.
- Through the help of Studio Monkey Shoulder, the Masisi radio station will amplify the work of Black Caribbean queer creatives to foster a welcoming, diverse cultural hub that stretches throughout the Miami mixed music community and beyond. Using the power of radio to give voice to marginalized communities in the city, Masisi will educate the Miami mixed music community through an inclusive platform that allows all artists to express themselves freely.

- Spearheaded by Gilles Peterson in partnership with Worldwide FM and Monkey Shoulder Whisky, Studio Monkey Shoulder includes a $60K fund that is currently being awarded to grassroots music communities who want to bring to life an innovative project that spotlights their community and scene.
- Studio Monkey Shoulder evaluated hundreds of applications to award the U.S. portion ($12K) of a global fund ($60K) to Masisi.
- After winning the Studio Monkey Shoulder grant, Masisi received invaluable support from Worldwide FM, Gilles Peterson and Monkey Shoulder through project development, production assistance, content creation and creative inspiration.
- In October, Worldwide FM will showcase Masisi – along with the other winners from countries such as the UK, Taiwan, Nigeria and India – on air, where Masisi will be interviewed by Gilles Peterson, who is a legendary BBC Radio 6 broadcaster known for discovering fresh talent in the music industry through his independent record label Brownswood Recordings.
