After the success of his “end-of-season” stone crab festival in May, Chef Joulin is bringing them back for a “start-of-season” stone crab festival this Saturday, November 5th.  Medium claws are dished up for only $2.00/claw all night long or until they run out.  Regularly priced at $5.00/claw, this is a pretty good deal once you get crackin’.  Come for the claws and stay for the party as it continues every Saturday night with a live DJ from 10pm until 2am.

Semilla Eatery and Bar is a locals’ favorite located in the heart of South Beach.  A chef-driven concept, Semilla was created by renowned chef, Frederic Joulin.  Joulin hails from Paris, where he developed culinary skills at a very young age with his father, who worked in the food industry and a notable Parisian chef who took him under his wing.  He trained in Parisian restaurants, went to hospitality school there, and began cooking with Michelin star chefs like Guy Savoy, and as a private chef to President Jacques Chirac of France.  The young chef then went on to open his first restaurant in Paris, Le Clos St. Honoré.  Everything he served there was homemade, a standard that would become integral to his cooking philosophy.  When Joulin moved to the U.S., he did some private high-end catering, and worked as executive chef at Villa Mayfair before opening Semilla Eatery and Bar.

The restaurant’s name, semilla, means “seed” in Spanish, which is reflective of its’ dishes, which all start with basic, wholesome ingredients.  The menu, which is seasonally driven and mostly organic, uses the freshest local ingredients possible and just enough seasoning and preparation to accentuate the foods’ natural essence.  Small Bites include Organic Spiced Cauliflower with crumbled cashew nuts and a Homemade Pork Rilette, while heartier appetizers include Mediterranean Grilled Octopus with fennel salad and Wagyu Beef Carpaccio with hearts of palm.  There are gluten free options on the menu like the Florida Gluten Free Lobster Pasta, and responsibly raised fish and meat dishes like the Branzino Filet “A La Plancha” and Organic Chicken Breast Cordon Bleau.  Of course, this is a French chef, so you won’t want to pass up the decadent selection of desserts.

The space itself is welcoming and intimate, with a large horseshoe shaped bar offering front-row seats to the bustling open kitchen right in the center.  Cozy banquet seating lines one wall where romantic tables are softly lit, and terra cotta pots line the walls with fresh basil, rosemary, and sage.  There is a glass-enclosed wine cellar in the back and al fresco dining in the front.  The vibe at Semilla is always cheerful and relaxed, attracting an eclectic mix of sophisticated clientele, but Friday night has garnered much popularity for its all night happy hour and live DJ.  There is something happening every night at Semilla Eatery and Bar, and there is always world-class cuisine and cocktails.
