Books & Books becomes PLANET BARBECUE! this evening in honor of multi-award winning author and PBS TV host Steven Raichlen. The new edition of his Planet Barbecue! (Workman Publishing, $22.95) is a singular look at the world’s most popular and universal cooking method in more than 50 countries, on 6 continents, through two million years of human history. Raichlen will give a talk and powerpoint on the subject and through stories, slides, historical documents and video will present barbecue in all its cultural diversity and fiery polymorphous glory. In fact, this is the first and only time Raichlen will give this presentation in Florida. The next time it will be given at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. and the Natural History Museum in New York. Tonight’s launch party also features Barbecue Stations in the Courtyard – including: –Malaysian turmeric prawns with fried garlic peanut sauce; South African Piri piri chicken wings; USA’s Hill Country brisket sandwiches; Cambodian coconut grilled corn and Brazilian spit-roasted pineapple. Plus, live music by Latin/world-music ensemble ESCALENO. TICKETS are required for this event and are available at all Books & Books locations. Your purchase of Planet Barbecue! ($22.95 + tax) entitles you to receive ONE (1) TICKET to the Planet Barbecue Courtyard Party and Reserved Seating for Raichlen’s talk. An additional COMPANION ticket may be purchased for $5, redeemable as a coupon toward any book purchase at Books & Books. Party in the courtyard from 7-8pm, followed by Steve’s presentation indoors from 8-9:30pm. The party requires a ticket. The talk is free, first-come, first-served after ticket-holders have been seated. In addition, The Café at Books & Books will offer some delicious menu choices inspired by Steve’s cookbook that can be ordered a la carte, throughout the evening.
