WHAT: Describing their sound as “cinematic rock,” the stylistically ambitious Columbus, Ohio rock band Starset emerged in the mid-2010s with a thoroughly developed thematic narrative already in place. Through sweeping science fiction concept albums like 2017’s Vessels and 2019’s Divisions, the band built a devoted audience and enjoyed chart success in the process. Starset‘s fourth LP, Horizons, appeared in October 2021. Led by frontman Dustin Bates, Starset have constructed an elaborate mythos surrounding themselves in which they insist they were recruited by one Dr. Aston Wise of the Starset Society to spread awareness of scientific phenomena that have been ignored or hidden from public view, most notably transmissions believed to be of human origin that have been broadcast from the constellation Ophiuchus.
