SoBay Festival of the Arts

Set against the backdrop of a growing South Biscayne Bay (SoBay) community, the SoBay Festival of the Arts is an annual celebration of the literary, performing and visual arts created to raise awareness of the rich cultural resources in our community, highlight artists, and promote the missions of partnering cultural arts organizations.

The 2011 SoBay Festival of the Arts will kick-off its two week long series of event with the opening of the ArtSoBay Exhibit. Artists interested in participating must complete a formal application. Deadline for submissions is January 16, 2011 (postmarked Jan. 13, 2011).

ARTSOBAY EXHIBIT OPENING

Join us for the ArtSoBay Exhibit Opening – an annual open call, juried fine art exhibit held at the Deering Estate at Cutler. The exhibit showcases contemporary art in a variety of media that depict the soul of artists utilizing basic elements of color, line, form, texture and scale. Each year, hundreds of artists apply for this very select exhibition juried by local art icons like David Castillo & Bernice Steinbaum, amongst others. We are pleased to announce that Rene Morales, Associate Curator for the Miami Art Museum (MAM), will serve as this year’s esteemed guest juror.

EMERGINATION PIANO CONCERT & BRUNCH

In collaboration with the Deering Estate’s Living Artist Concert series, this afternoon Piano concert features emerging pianists from the FIU School of Music Piano Department in a thematic concert reflecting works inspired by nature.

A historical discussion, moderated by Jennifer Tisthammer – and led by the Deering Estate’s own Literary Artists-in-Residence and Education and Interpretive Staff members. The discussion will center on our own discoveries in the juxtapositions of technology and culture depicted through Charles Deering – an icon of a moment in our nation’s history. The panelists will share historical information and insights into the forces which affected, and the figures who shaped, the place that would become known as the Deering Estate at Cutler in the period from 1896 to 1922, chief among these Charles Deering himself.

The Theatre League of South Florida is an alliance of theatrical organizations and professionals dedicated to nurturing, promoting, and advocating for the growth and prestige of the South Florida theatre industry. Through a collaboration of artists and arts organizations, the Theatre League of South Florida will present an evening of Vignette’s at the Deering Estate.

ARTIST VILLAGE TOUR & ART TAKE AWAY WORKSHOP

In Charles Deering’s time, the Carriage House and Power House served as a garage, machine shop and servants’ quarters. Today, these houses make up the Artist Village at the Deering Estate providing studio, exhibit, and classroom space for local writers, poets, painters, and sculptors. Interact with emerging artists and learn about their area of expertise as they create, display, and sell original works of art.

SHORT FILM CINEMA AT THE DEERING ESTATE

The Miami Short Film Festival brings the best of short film cinema to the Deering Estate at Cutler! The Miami short Film Festival partners with various art organizations and businesses around town to bring the art of short film to the Miami community all year round. Through these efforts the community can learn more about the craft of short filmmaking while enjoying diverse experiences around town.

“MOONLIGHT & MUSIC” VALENTINE’S DAY CONCERT featuring Victor Espinola

Concert begins at 7:00 pm; gate opens at 6:00 pm

The festival will end on a romantic note with the 12th annual “Moonlight and Music” Valentine’s Day Concert. The concert will feature Victor Espinola, multi-instrumentalist and singer, who is most known for playing the Paraguayan harp. His style of music is influenced by a combination of Flamenco, Gypsy, Brazilian, Middle Eastern, African, Pop, and Dance. Victor was the featured harpist on the Yanni “World Tour.” His style of World Electronic Acoustic Music has captivated audiences from around the globe.

The Valentine’s Day Concert at the Deering Estate offers couples the opportunity to celebrate their love at a romantic, outdoor concert under the stars, on the edge of Biscayne Bay. Guests are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets. Limited refreshments and food will be available for an additional fee. The gate opens at 7:00 pm and the concert begins at 8:00 pm. Parking is free.
