Shaping the Future of Miami: Opening Night!

Over the past century, Miami has urbanized rapidly, even while occupying one of the most environmentally fragile geographies on Earth. Over the next 100 years, Miami will face significant climate challenges. Among them, sea level rise will cause increasing stresses on both its natural and built environments.
During the 2018-19 academic year, Florida International University and Gensler partnered to re-think how development codes in the City of Miami might be adapted in response to rising seas. With their guidance, FIU Architecture thesis students conducted research, devised a broad range of scenarios for urban resilience, and developed potential strategies to address sea level rise at regional, city, and neighborhood scales.
Shaping the future of Miami showcases the results of a year-long process of collaboration between the profession and the academy, one that introduced a new generation of architects to the complex challenges posed by rising seas, inviting them –and all of us– to envision a more resilient Miami.
The exhibit opening night at the MCAD will include light refreshments, a short talk by Professor Marilys Nepomechie and Ana Benatuil followed by presentations of two projects by students who participated in the thesis class.
