His book, “Mysteries of the Asteroid Belt,” blends together the tropes of mystery, ancient astronauts and space thrillers.
For most people, science is pure fact, but for newly published author Safaa A. Mhawi, many things considered science today were once regarded as myth or legend. Science fiction, therefore, is as much about predicting scientific advance as it is about appreciating it. Such was the theme of his first book, “Mystery of the Asteroid Belt.”
As its title says, the book imagines a future where mankind is on the verge of sending human explorers to the Asteroid Belt. It follows a renowned astronaut named Jacob Brown and several other characters who are eager to explore the secrets of this distant region of space.
Since he was a young boy, Jacob was fascinated by a story his grandfather told him about the Asteroid Belt. Unlike the many thinkers of the time, he did not believe that the belt was the scattered remains of a planet that was simply torn apart by gravity. Rather, he believed that this planet was destroyed by something else and that it was home to a civilization far greater and advanced than theirs. Other parts of the story follow a woman named Rebecca, who also holds a mysterious connection to the power that may be resting, hidden in the shadows of the belt.
