Butterfly World
The largest butterfly park in the world, in Coconut Creek. Three million butterflies a year. You walk through them.
Butterfly World opened in 1988 in Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek. The founder, Ron Boender, built screened aviaries large enough to walk through and filled them with butterflies from around the world. The park now raises three million butterflies a year, has the largest butterfly breeding facility in the world, and is home to over 20,000 butterflies at any given time.
Butterfly World is at 3600 W Sample Rd in Coconut Creek, open daily. Admission is $34.95 for adults. The North American Butterfly Pavilion is the largest free-flight butterfly aviary in the world. The hummingbird aviary is a separate experience worth the extra time. Go on a weekday morning for the best experience.
Walking through the main aviary, butterflies land on you without warning. The effect is genuinely disorienting — you are surrounded by thousands of living things that have no fear of you. The park is also a serious conservation and research facility. The gift shop sells chrysalises that you can take home and hatch.
