One of the most anticipated new art and design events this year was PLACE Project Group, a series of intimate and engaging hybrid art + design events that cross cultural disciplines. The brainchild ofFounder & Executive Director Grela Orihuela, who is the former director and curator of the AQUA Art Miami and Art Wynwood fairs, PLACE Project Group is establishing a new approach that compliments traditional large art fairs by creating events that are collaborative, more intimate and engaging.
While the NYC edition during design week and the Hamptons Summer installment of PLACE have been postponed due to Covid-19, Orihuela is now giving a sneak peek of the concept fair with an online version called PLACE Preview which will go live on May 18th and PLACE Miami – Preview Edition, a small-scale event taking place May 28th through June 27th, which will be one of the inaugural initiatives to re-open the Miami Design District.
PLACE Preview will showcase 10 vignettes featuring the work of painter Julian Cardinal whose stylish paintings evoke classic, alluring subjects. They have been paired with the furniture of designerVivian Carbonell, of Carbonell Design whose aesthetic of clean lines and less-is-more approach offers the perfect complement to the vogue sensibilities of Julian’s work. Because these paintings remind us that fashion is timeless, we borrow iconic and seminal shoes from the museum quality Valenzuela Shoe Collection.

PLACE Miami – Preview Edition, which will be located in Paradise Plaza Space #127 in the Miami Design District is a must-attend destination for influential art professionals and enthusiasts, to experience a fresh approach to how a collector experiences and engages with visual art, furniture design, jewelry design, fashion and music. The venue will hold the physical works from Carbonell Design that are represented onPLACE Preview alongside local artists Gavin Perry, known for his mind-altering paintings and sculptures and Tawnie Silva known for his dramatic textile works that incorporate text and a vibrant color palette.
Curated by Orihuela, the collaborative groupings are assembled in an inviting manner and bring together artists that might not otherwise work together in the hopes of sparking a conversation. “Now more than ever we need stimulating, sensory dialogue to remind us of how art fulfills our lives, even if through a mask” say Orihuela.
