PHOTOJOURNALIST JIPSY DEBUTS FIRST SOLO SHOW JUST AS YOU WERE AT WYNWOOD’S BUTTER GALLERY

Miami-based photographer Jipsy will celebrate the opening of her first solo show, Just As You Were, on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 pm at Wynwood’s Butter Gallery. Guests will enjoy champagne and wine selections throughout the night. The exhibit will remain on view through April 2, free and open to the public by appointment. Just As You Were was curated from thousands of photographs taken by Jipsy herself from 2005 to the present. A prominent nightlife fixture since arriving to Miami in 1996, Jipsy’s photos tell a story with captivating colors, stories and characters.

“When it comes to why I love documenting the night life, I have to say it’s all about ‘the party’. The characters, the fashion, the music, the debauchery… There’s another side of Miami nightlife that the glossy magazines don’t always show. I gravitate to the people who dress up in their own style and are usually not in the VIP. Most of the time these are the people who stood on line, paid their entrance and came to dance without any intention of being in front of the camera. Add them to the mix of great music and a beautifully lit club, and its magic. I want to bring that feeling to the viewer,” says Jipsy.

Jipsy studied photography at the Art & Design High school in New York City. Always obsessed with freeze framing “the” moment, Jipsy began exploring the nightlife of Manhattan at the early age of 14. With her camera in tow, Jipsy became a staple of the underground dance culture in the 1980s and documented her experiences with the scenesters and club kids. Jipsy continued her fascination with photography into the ‘90s by posting photos of her friends and acquaintances on various websites. By 2002, Jipsy set her sights on the fashion scene and ran her own vintage clothing store on eBay. By posting photos of Miami’s club kids she was able to drive traffic to her virtual store. She finally launched her eponymous website, NefariousGirl.com, in 2004. Thousands of partygoers log on weekly to see if they were snapped.

Jipsy has photographed hundreds of events and parties around the country. Locally, Jipsy has documented nightclubs through the years including The District, PS 14, Pawn Shop, Space and Vagabond. She has also photographed infamous personalities such as Patricia Fields, Alejandro Calvani, Aimme Philips, Lara Coppola Estefan, David LaChapelle, Joey Arias, Susanne Bartsch, Ladyfag, Heatherette, Juliette Lewis, Peaches, Santigold, The Stills, Living Things, Ave D, The Sounds, The Bravery and many more.

Jipsy has been featured in countless publications including MIAMI Magazine, Ocean Drive, Miami New Times, The SunPost, City Link, Spin, Map, Black Book, Inked and Women’s Wear Daily.
