For the 2nd year in a row, Fashion Design students from Miami International University of Art & Design create garments inspired by chocolate for Aventura Mall’s Chocolate Festival on Sunday, October 10th from 12:00pm – 4:00pm.
Of over 30 garments submitted to compete, only 10 will be selected for the event. The students were tasked to create designs inspired by chocolate. A chocoholic’s dream, the chosen garments will be featured during a runway show and later displayed at the mall’s Center Court along with a decadent display of delicious chocolate morsels prepared by some of South Florida’s most popular restaurants. The final garment will be selected by judges to award the prize for the best designed garment. Last year’s winning garment “the chocolate fairy” was designed using candy wrappers of Kit Kat and M & Ms for the bodice, caramel and chocolate colored tulle for the tutu skirt, and Rocher chocolate cups as the adorning ruffles/flowers.
“The garment designs are truly outstanding and impressive – I’m very confident that the finished garments will be spectacular; our students love working on this project – although it can be very tricky on the waistline – someone has to eat all the chocolate to use the wrappers,” says Charlene Parsons, chair of fashion design for Miami International University of Art & Design.
Proceeds from tickets sold to trade with vendors for chocolate treats during the festival will benefit the Children’s Craniofacial Association. Participants in Aventura Mall’s Chocolate Festival include: Chef Allen’s, Grand Lux Café, Schakolad Chocolate Factory, The Grateful Palate, Porto Vita, Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club, Turnberry Ocean Colony, and Ocean Prime.
