MIAMI GALLOS BECOME MIAMI'S NEWEST SPORTS FRANCHISE

The World Series of Boxing (WSB) announced the new name for the Miami franchise and released the logo.  The franchise will be named the Miami Gallos, and will compete in the World Series of Boxing Americas Conference against teams from Los Angeles, Memphis, and Mexico City.

“The name has a connotation of ‘proud fighter’,” said Mike Sophia, General Manager of the Miami Gallos. “It is also a unique identity that we hope will connect well with our local culture, our community and our fans.”

The name Gallos most closely translates to “Gamecocks” in American sports lingo.

“The Miami Gallos have chosen a great identity that we believe will not only represent our athletes well, but will resonate within the community,” said Eric Parthen, Managing Director of WSB Americas.  “As the first team in the WSB Americas Conference to announce their identity, it is only fitting that Miami is the host of the opening match of the WSB Americas.”

The Miami Gallos will open the inaugural WSB season on November 16, 2010, when they take on Los Angeles at the AmericanAirlines Arena, in what will be the very first match on the World Series of Boxing schedule.  The Gallos will host six matches in the 12-match regular season that runs through March 2011.

Miami Gallos tickets go on sale to the general public on Monday, October 18.  For tickets call (305) 818-6880, order online through Ticketmaster, or visit www.miamigallos.com for more information.

The Gallos will compete in a team boxing format, with each match consisting of five bouts in bantamweight, lightweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight categories.  Each bout will consist of five, three minute rounds.
