The Miami Dolphins hosted their annual Girls High School Flag Football Jamboree presented by Under Armour at the Doctor’s Hospital Training Facility in Davie. Approximately 400 student athletes participated in the 13-game event. The Jamboree, a follow up to the girls flag football clinic was a great success, as 26 of the top programs from around South Florida played in the annual tune up.
“We had another successful event this year,” said Miami Dolphins Executive Director of Community Affairs Twan Russell. “Every year, the participation continues to grow and the girls are getting better. This shows how much girls flag football has evolved as a sport and we look forward to doing it again in 2015.”
Since 1997, the Dolphins and Broward County Athletic Association (BCAA) have partnered in these games. Started with just six teams, the Jamboree has grown to unbelievable heights.
“I think that the games were very exciting and the kids had a good time out here,” said BCAA County Athletic Director Rocky Gillis. “We are seeing more participation in girls flag football and events like this continue to aid our efforts in growing the program.”
The BCAA was one of first conferences in the state of Florida that went full force with girls flag football 16 years ago. With the Jamboree, the girls get ready for the upcoming season, while receiving a great experience in a professional football team’s training facility.
“We love this event,” said South Broward High School Head Coach Lavaughn Kelly, whose team defeated South Plantation 22-0. “We had a young team last year and finished the season with a 1-9 record. We worked hard and became more focused and disciplined from a year ago and it showed today.”
Win or lose, every team was able to gain experience from the Jamboree. Some teams used it as a tune up for the season, while others were able to get valuable playing time for girls that are new to the team.
“For the girls this a great experience,” said Nova High School Coach Kelly Ferguson whose team defeated Northeast 27-0. “After losing in last year’s game, it is good for us to get a win before we begin our season. We were able to play some of our freshmen and sophomore girls that didn’t get to play last year.”
The girls flag football regular season begins Monday.
