Miami Design District (MDD) has announced the winner of its esteemed 2023 Annual Design Commission, and this year it is none other than renowned designer Lara Bohinc, founder of Bohinc Studio. The collaboration between MDD and Design Miami/ Curatorial Lab aims to bring a sense of playfulness, functionality, and comfort to the neighborhood through the installation entitled ‘Utopia’.
Set to be unveiled during Miami Art Week at the end of November, ‘Utopia’ will consist of four installations that feature irregular, bulbous forms inspired by growing cellular organisms. These sculptures will include outdoor seating, tables, and oversized light sculptures placed strategically to create intimate resting spaces where visitors can relax and appreciate the surroundings.
Adding an element of eco-consciousness, 900 egg-shaped birdhouses will be scattered throughout the trees, providing shelter for local birdlife. Additionally, a giant centerpiece egg-form will serve as a playful refuge for children, further enhancing the familial and inclusive nature of the installation.
Bohinc’s commitment to sustainability is evident in her choice of materials, as the pieces will be made from cork and painted by hand in vibrant hues that pay homage to Miami’s architectural color palette. Furthermore, the sculptures will be solar-powered, creating an enchanting and inviting glow at night.
