MAXWELL & JILL SCOTT American Airlines Arena

Maxwell and Jill Scott come to the American Airlines Arena in downtown Miami on June 14.

Maxwell was enormously important in defining and shaping the neo-soul movement that rose to prominence over the latter half of the ’90s. Drawing his greatest inspiration from the concept of the R&B auteur (looking to artists like Prince, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, etc.), Maxwell recorded some of the most ambitious R&B of his time, becoming wildly popular and often earning critical raves in the process with hits like “Sumthin’ Sumthin’,” “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” “Lifetime” and the outstanding cover of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work.”  His Third Album, Now, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Album Charts. What was more, his recurring theme of romantic monogamy set him apart from the vast majority of his  lover-man contemporaries.

Jill Scott is an artist with an abiding, deep commitment to lyrical honesty and musical integrity. Simply put, if she feels it, she writes and sings it. While vivid imagery, metaphor analogy are her stock in trade, there’s no pretense, no hiding. She’s upfront, in-your-face always real, using her own distinctive poetry to breathe life into words, digging inside to bring forth the accompanying emotion.

A mature R&B vocalist who excells with slower, sensual material (“Slowly, Surely,” “I’m Not Afraid,” “My Love”), Jill Scott is versatile enough to pack plenty of punch with anthems of pride and self-empowerment (“Golden,” “Family Reunion,” “Hate on Me”).
