IN MEMORIAM: SUNDANCE CHANNEL TO PAY TRIBUTE TO GROUNDBREAKING ARTIST WITH ENCORE AIRING OF “LOUISE BOURGEOIS: THE SPIDER, THE MISTRESS AND THE TANGERINE”

Sundance Channel will mark the passing of artist Louise Bourgeois, the first woman ever honored with a major retrospective at New York’s Museum Of Modern Art, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 98. The network will present an encore of “Louise Bourgeois” The Spider, The Mistress and the Tangerine” on Monday, 6/7 at 5:15 pm et/pt with a repeat at 1:30am et/pt.

Critics have applied surrealist, feminist or postmodernist labels to categorize the enigmatic and deeply disturbing sculptures, assemblages, installations and drawings of Louise Bourgeois. However, as revealed in this revelatory documentary profile by the late Marion Cajori and Amei Wallach, the artist could be as mysterious and haunting as her work. Shot between 1993 and 2007, with piquant commentary from critic/curators Robert Storr and Deborah Wye, and the artist’s longtime aide-de-camp Jerry Gorovoy, “Louise Bourgeois” The Spider, The Mistress and the Tangerine” follows Bourgeois at work and play, fashioning art in her studio and ruminating upon the deep emotional and psychological roots of her work.  Her massive spiders, some as large as 30 feet, have been exhibited throughout the world and  symbolize the maternal impulse. However, much of her groundbreaking work was fueled by the artist’s passionate connection with various childhood traumas (her father’s live-in mistress being just one).
