Now celebrating its Fifth Anniversary Season, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County proudly announces a special one-night-only engagement of one of the most acclaimed contemporary dance companies in the United States – HUBBARD STREET DANCE CHICAGO (HSDC) – in the company’s Miami debut!  The company brings a thrilling and diverse repertory program to Miami including works from HSDC resident choreographer Jirí Kylían, two new works from Spanish choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo, and a favorite piece by Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin, whose Batsheva Dance Company wowed Adrienne Arsht Center audiences last season.  HSDC performs on December 11, 2010 at 8 p.m. in the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House as part of the John S. and James L. Knight Masterworks Season, Sanford and Dolores Ziff Dance Series.

Tickets range from $25 to $90 and are on sale now.  Tickets may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at www.arshtcenter.org.

Over the past three decades, HSDC has built a stellar international reputation as one of the foremost contemporary dance companies, most notable for its innovative and stylistically diverse repertory and for always being at the forefront of new and creative choreography and production concepts.  The company’s 16 dancers display an unparalleled versatility and virtuosity, showcased in the diversity of HSDC’s bold programming and passionate performances.

“Our Sanford and Dolores Ziff Dance Series is virtually leaping off the stage this season, with 10 thrilling dance companies from around the world.  With Hubbard Street Dance Chicago we have the unique opportunity to present an acclaimed American company whose repertory features the best pieces from choreographers around the globe,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center.  “We invite the South Florida community to join us in welcoming this world-class company to Miami for the first time, and to experience dance that defies expectations – dance without borders!”

HSDC’s performance at the Center features four impressive repertory works.  Spanish choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo is HSDC’s first resident choreographer, and the company’s program for Miami features two works by this fresh, new voice in contemporary dance.  A current HSDC company member, Cerrudo also danced for Stuttgart Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater before turning his focus to choreography.  Cerrudo’s latest work, “Blanco,” is set to music by Felix Mendelssohn and Charles-Valentin Alkan, creating a stunning mix of abstract and sculptural movements for four women. This piece was developed through one-on-one interaction with each of the four dancers, making it very personal to each of them, and unlike any other piece in the current repertoire.  Cerrudo’s “Deep Down Dos” is a work infused with dynamic energy and intensity.  The work is set to electro-acoustic composer Mason Bates’ “Music for Underground Spaces,” a piece inspired by crystalline caverns and blazing infernos.

“Tabula Rasa” is a signature work from Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin.  With a unique soundscore that includes haunting music by Arvo Pärt and a textured, original melodic haze, the piece conjures loneliness and loss through Naharin’s trademark movement quality – showcasing technical brilliance and nuanced athleticism.

Jirí Kylían rose to international fame as first a dancer and then a choreographer and artistic director for Nederlands Dans Theater.  Among the 66 dance works he has created for Nederlands, “27’52””stands out as a spellbinding treat for audience and performer – often leaving viewers with an urge to see the work again, in disbelief of what appeared on the stage, and wondering how it all could be physically possible.  With music by Dirk Haubrich, the piece takes the audience along for a game of chasing, challenging, virtual hide-and-seek culminating in a fun and fascinating finale.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (HSDC), under the artistic direction of Glenn Edgerton, celebrates 33 years as one of the most original forces in contemporary dance. Critically acclaimed for its exuberant, athletic and innovative repertoire, HSDC presents performances that inspire, challenge and engage audiences worldwide. The company’s ensemble of dancers displays unparalleled versatility and virtuosity, allowing HSDC to expand its eclectic repertoire with works by master American and international choreographers. HSDC also contributes to dance’s evolution by developing new choreographic talent and collaborating with artists in music, visual art and theatre. Since Lou Conte founded the company in 1977, HSDC has expanded beyond its main company to include Hubbard Street 2, which cultivates young professional dancers and choreographers,  performs nationally and internationally with a diverse and engaging repertoire; extensive Education & Community Programs which offer city- and state-accredited professional development for teachers to incorporate movement into curricula and allow young people to experience dance; and the Lou Conte Dance Studio, which offers a wide variety of classes weekly in jazz, ballet, modern, tap, African, hip hop, yoga, Pilates and Zumba®, at levels from basic to professional, as well as workshops and master classes.

The company’s Miami engagement also includes outreach and educational activities at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the local South Florida community.
