Never before released in the United States, Nobuhiku Obayashi’s outrageous cult film House is finally hitting theatres in all its bizarre glory, thanks to Janus Films (Criterion Collection) which has lovingly restored the film in high definition digital format. Too absurd to be genuinely terrifying, yet too nightmarish to be merely comic, House seems like it was beamed to Earth from another planet. Half absurdist fantasy and half psychedelic horror film, the legendary director fashioned the script after the eccentric musings of his eleven-year-old daughter, then employed all the tricks in his analog arsenal (mattes, animation, and collage) to make them a visually astonishing, raucous reality. House is one of the most exciting genre discoveries in years, and one of the most unusual experiences you will ever have in a movie theatre.

“ONE OF THE MOST COVETED CULT FILMS TO EVER EMERGE FROM THE FANTASTIC REALM OF ASIAN CINEMA” -The Brooklyn Rail

“Run. Wake your neighbor. Slap your children. Eye your cat with suspicion. Every once in a blue-screen moon, a movie will remind even the most jaded of cult-film aficionados that, no, in fact, they have not seen everything.” –Nashville Scene

“ABOUT AS STYLISTICALLY UNIQUE AS YOU CAN POSSIBLY GET!”

 -BeatRoute Magazine

“A dangerous amount of fun, best experienced with a crowd of unsuspecting but open-minded cinéphiles. Get ready to be bewildered.” -Notcoming.com

“INSANELY ENTERTAINING!. . . For connoisseurs of the bizarre, House’s revival is long overdue.” –Seattle Times
