Homeless Trust to Recognize Anti-Violence Campaign Winners

The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, in conjunction with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, The Community Partnership for Homeless (CPH) and the Miami Coalition for the Homeless.

WHAT:           The 2009-2010 culmination of a public school education plan for students, implemented to help protect and assist people experiencing homelessness in Miami-Dade County. In response to the 2006 tragic beating death of Norris Gaynor, a Miami homeless man, by a group of teens, The Homeless Trust implemented this special program geared toward children Kindergarten through 12th grade. Two educational videos, with an accompanying, grade specific, week-long curriculum are presented to students. The videos feature Homeless Children telling their stories of homelessness. Students in grades K-5 are asked to produce a poster, and Middle and High School students are asked to write an essay describing their thoughts about homelessness after seeing the video and being exposed to the curriculum. The Posters and Essays were judged and three winners (Elementary, Middle, and High School) of the contest will be provided with a three day all expense paid trip to Disney World for a family of four. This year, the program has become of even more importance to The Homeless Trust, as they have also been instrumental in helping to pass a new Florida law that makes violence against the homeless a hate crime.

WHEN:          The winning students will present their posters and essays to The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust Board of Directors on Friday, May 28th at 9:00 a.m.
