Hollywood resident, Luz Perez, takes home the winning title with her Miami Mojo creation

Luz Perez Cupcake Winner

Fifteen local contestants came out to compete in The Shops at Sunset Place’s “Miami’s Top Cupcake Challenge.”  Flan, piña coladas and nutella were just some of the key ingredients used to create the mouth-watering cupcakes but were no competition against a mojito-inspired creation.

Miami’s Top Cupcake title went to Luz Perez for her original cupcake concept, Miami Mojo, a rum-infused vanilla cupcake topped with sweet minted-lime frosting and dusted with a crystallized sugar garnish.  Perez was awarded a $100 Simon American Express Gift Card and her picture will be featured as the winner of “Miami’s Top Cupcake Challenge” in SOMI Magazine.  Perez also received four complimentary tickets to attend Shop’s at Sunset Place’s “How Sweet It Is” on Nov. 18 where she will be recognized as the winner of the contest.

The winning selection was chosen based on taste, creativity and presentation by a panel of celebrity judges including Kathy Martin, Miami Herald Food Editor; Marybel Rodriguez, CBS4 anchor/reporter; Diana Diaz, Co-Anchor WSVN Today in Florida; Jewel Figueras, Miami Fashion and Style Examiner blogger and Letty Alvarez, baker and owner of LA Sweets.

“The Shops at Sunset Place was the perfect backdrop for Miami’s Top Cupcake Challenge,” said Claudia Marquez, director of mall marketing at The Shops at Sunset Place.  “This was the perfect way to kick off our upcoming event ‘How Sweet It Is’ which will support the community while allowing attendees to indulge in all-you-can-eat desserts and sweets.”

The family-friendly premier event “How Sweet It Is” will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thurs., Nov. 18, 2010 to benefit local charities.  South Florida restaurants, vendors and caterers will transform the mall into a paradise of tasty treats and gourmet delights.  The event will feature lavish displays of all-you-can-eat desserts, live entertainment and a kid zone with fun activities such as cookie decorating, trail-mix creation station and more.

Tickets are $20 and children 10 and under can enjoy the event for free.  Parking tickets will be validated with the purchase of an event ticket. For more information on “How Sweet It Is” or to purchase tickets, contact Claudia Marquez at (305) 663-0482 or via email at cmarquez@simon.com.
