Great Gables Events – wekend of August 13

Greetings,

It’s nice to be home in the Gables once again after nearly a month of travel. Thanks to all who wrote to say they missed their weekly list of Great Gables Events. (The Complete) Metropolis at Cosford Cinema
The latest restoration of Fritz Lang’s 1927 science fiction masterpiece, Metropolis, now with 25 minutes of lost footage and the original Gottfried Huppertz score. The film officially premiered in Berlin (at Lang’s original, un-cut length) on January 19, 1927. For its initial U.S. release, because of its length, Paramount Pictures cut the film down from 12 to 7 reels and hired American playwright Channing Pollock to rewrite the film’s title cards. Nearly an hour shorter and far less coherent, this version premiered in the U.S. in March of 1927. From 1927 until the early 1980s, Metropolis was screened in a variety of versions and lengths, but all of them derived from the general release prints cut by Paramount and Germany’s UFA Studios. Seldom has the rediscovery of a cache of lost footage ignited such widespread curiosity as did the announcement, in July 2008, that an essentially complete copy of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis had been found — a 16mm dupe negative unearthed by the curator of the Buenos Aires Museo del Cine that was considerably longer than any existing print. It included not merely a few additional snippets, but 25 minutes of “lost” footage — about a fifth of the film — that had not been seen since its Berlin debut. Cosford Cinema is pleased to present this newly restored classic. The film begins at 7pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. $8, ($6 seniors) cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.cosfordcinema.com

Fresh, funny, and totally entertaining, this light-hearted comedy tackles the question we so often ask ourselves on life’s roller coaster journey of ups and downs, Are We There Yet? The typical bumps, u-turns, and roadblocks that are all too familiar are played out on stage in a riotous fashion. Cell 211 At Cosford Cinema
Winner of 8 Goya Awards (the equivalent to the Academy Awards in Spain) including Best Film, Director, Screenwriter and Actor. Juan Oliver is about to become a prison officer. All of a sudden, and due to some building work, some plaster falls from the ceiling and hits Juan Olivier, who passes out. The guards take him into cell 211, which is empty, to try and revive him. But, as luck would have it, that’s when a riot breaks out at the high security FIES cell block, the one that houses the most dangerous inmates. Juan’s colleagues run away, leaving him stranded. When he wakes up in the cell he takes stock of the situation: if he wants to save his skin, he must pretend to be a prisoner. Michael Largo: God’s Lunatics
What is the meaning of life? Since the dawn of civilization, humankind has sought to answer the mysteries of existence. Unfortunately this restless search for the divine has, all too often, driven seekers in regrettable directions, toward the comically ridiculous and irrational but also the frighteningly horrific and maniacal. Arm yourself with God’s Lunatics (Harper, $16.99) before your next encounter with those who have been blinded by the light. Award-winning author Michael Largo, “the Capote of kaput” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution), chronicles history’s vast and colorful cast of true believers — from the hidden side of the Bible’s eccentric characters to today’s street-corner doomsayers, and from extraterrestrial communicators, levitating hermits, and flagellating ascetics to self-serving preachers of overindulgence who believed money, sex, and drugs were the keys to the portal to divine understanding. In addition to the firewalkers, serpent handlers, cultists, terrorists, and alleged time travelers, God’s Lunatics also reveals the dubious foundations of the world’s major faiths and the many religious customs and laws that continue to influence governments and society, whether you are a believer or not.
