Gwen Cooper: Homer’s Odyssey
The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen’s veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who’d been abandoned. It was love at first sight. Everyone warned that Homer would always be an underachiever, never as playful or independent as other cats. But the kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo, a tiny daredevil with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. In Homer’s Odyssey (Delacorte Press, $20), Cooper recounts how Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease and leapt five feet into the air to catch flies in mid-buzz. He survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen’s life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night. But it was Homer’s unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that inspired Gwen daily and transformed her life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized Homer had taught her the most important lesson of all: Love isn’t something you see with your eyes. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

What is cinematherapy? Cinema puts us in touch with the deepest roots of our identity. Through cinematherapy we can encounter the most profound sources of our identity and discover that the contexts narrated and the roles of the protagonists in films often mirror those we live out in our daily lives. In her book, The Images Behind the Emotions: the Archetypes and the Power of Myth in Cinema, psychologist Gioia Gabellieri Bargagli takes us on a guided tour of the film trilogy Lord of the Rings and films by directors from all over the world, inviting us to examine a number of Jungian archetypes with which we identify, and revealing the capacity of cinema to assist the spectator along a voyage of self-discovery. Bargagli is an adjunct professor of Cinematherapy at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and at Milan’s University “Cattolica” where she also teaches laboratories in Team Building. She is also an adjunct professor of Cinematherapy at Miami-Fort Lauderdale’s Nova Southeastern University. Presented in collaboration with the Italian Film Festival. Meet the psychologist at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 7:30pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

The Rule of Women in Early Modern Europe
Mihoko Suzuki and Anne Cruz bring a transnational perspective to the study of early modern women rulers and female sovereignty in The Rule of Women in Early Modern Europe (University of Illinois Press, $25). Drawing on early modern literature and historical documents, this study investigates the various political, discursive, and symbolic measures employed to negotiate and support female sovereignty by both early modern writers and the rulers themselves. The detailed analysis of the women’s responses — or inability to respond — to these strictures underscores the relationship between early modern authors and sovereigns and the complex and vexed situation of European women rulers. Contributors to the volume juxtapose rulers from different countries, including well-known sovereigns such as Isabel of Castile and Elizabeth Tudor, as well as other less widely studied figures Isabeau of Bavaria, Jeanne d’Albret, Isabel Clara Eugenia, Juana of Austria, and Catherine of Brandenburg. Several essays also focus on the representations of foreign rulers such as Catherine de’ Medici in England and Elizabeth I in France. Presented in collaboration with the Center of the Humanities at the University of Miami. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

Marcel Proust’s Search for Lost Time
An accessible, irreverent guide to one of the most admired and entertaining novels of the past century. There is no other guide like this; a user-friendly and enticing entry into the marvelously enjoyable world of Proust. At seven volumes, three thousand pages, and more than four hundred characters, as well as a towering reputation as a literary classic, Proust’s novel can seem daunting. But though begun a century ago, in 1909, it is in fact as engaging and relevant to our times as ever. Patrick Alexander is passionate about Proust’s genius and appeal — he calls the work “outrageously bawdy and extremely funny” — and in his guide he makes it more accessible to the general reader through detailed plot summaries, historical and cultural background, a guide to the fifty most important characters, maps, family trees, illustrations, and a brief biography of Proust. Essential for readers and book groups currently reading Proust and who want help keeping track of the huge cast and intricate plot, this Reader’s Guide is also a wonderful introduction for students and new readers and a memory-refresher for long-time fans. (Random House $15.95). Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com
