Waking Sleeping Beauty At Cosford Cinema
By the mid-eighties, Walt Disney’s fabled animation studios had fallen on hard times. These conditions had produced a series of box office flops and led to pessimistic forecasts. Waking Sleeping Beauty isn’t a fairy tale but rather the true story of how Disney regained its magic with a staggering output of hits: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King and more. Director Don Hahn and producer Peter Schneider bring an insider’s knowledge to this comeback. Hahn’s documentary offers a fascinating perspective on what took place within the creative ranks as well as among the leadership team of Michael D. Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Roy Disney. The documentary even includes key figures who famously left the company, such as Don Bluth, John Lasseter and Tim Burton. The film begins at 8:45pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. $8, ($6 seniors) cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.cosfordcinema.com

Kids: The Birthday Ball
Lois Lowry is a preeminent voice in contemporary children’s literature, with a canon of more than thirty books for readers of all ages, including the Newbery Medal recipients Number the Stars and The Giver. Books & Books is proud to welcome her with her brand new book, The Birthday Ball (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $16) – a middle-grade humorous novel. It’s illustrated by Jules Feiffer, which makes it even more of a treat. Princess Patricia Priscilla is bored with her royal life and the excitement surrounding her 16th birthday ball. Doomed to endure courtship by three grotesquely unappealing noblemen, she escapes her fate — for a week. What begins as a cure for boredom becomes a chance for the princess to break the rules. This is a laugh-out-loud book and sure to be a memorable event. Tickets are required. Free tickets are available at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 3pm. Bill McKibben – Eaarth: Making a Life Tough New Planet
Twenty years ago, with The End of Nature, Bill McKibben offered one of the earliest warnings about global warming. Those warnings went mostly unheeded; now, he insists, we need to acknowledge that we’ve waited too long, and that massive change is not only unavoidable but already under way. Our old familiar globe is suddenly melting, drying, acidifying, flooding, and burning in ways that no human has ever seen. We’ve created, in very short order, a new planet, still recognizable but fundamentally different. We may as well call it Eaarth (Henry Holt & Company, $24). That new planet is filled with new binds and traps. A changing world costs large sums to defend — think of the money that went to repair New Orleans, or the trillions it will take to transform our energy systems. But the endless economic growth that could underwrite such largesse depends on the stable planet we’ve managed to damage and degrade. We can’t rely on old habits any longer. Our hope depends, McKibben argues, on scaling back — on building the kind of societies and economies that can hunker down, concentrate on essentials, and create the type of community (in the neighborhood, but also on the Internet) that will allow us to weather trouble on an unprecedented scale. Change — fundamental change — is our best hope on a planet suddenly and violently out of balance. This event is presented in collaboration with Green Monkey.
