Carl Wilkens: World Outside My Shoes
As a humanitarian aid worker, Carl Wilkens moved his young family to Rwanda in the spring of 1990. When the genocide was launched in April 1994, Carl refused to leave, even when urged to do so by close friends, his church and the United States government. Carl was the only American to remain in the country. Venturing out each day into streets crackling with mortars and gunfire, he worked his way through roadblocks of angry, bloodstained soldiers and civilians armed with machetes and assault rifles in order to bring food, water and medicine to groups of orphans trapped around the city. His actions saved the lives of hundreds. In January 2008, with no end in sight to the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan, Carl decided quit his job and dedicate himself full time to raising awareness of the ways in which ordinary people can make work to stop genocide. He and his wife Teresa have since formed an educational nonprofit, World Outside My Shoes, to facilitate this important work. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 3pm. A Reader’s Guide to Proust
David Ellison presents A Reader’s Guide to Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. Marcel Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time) is many things at once: a novel of education, a portrait of French society during the Third Republic, a masterful psychological analysis of love, a reflection on homosexuality, an essay in moral and aesthetic theory, and, above all, one of the great literary achievements of the twentieth century. This Reader’s Guide to Proust (Cambridge University Press, $24.99) analyzes each volume of the ‘Recherche’ in order and in detail. Without jargon or technical language, David Ellison leads the reader through the work, clarifying but not oversimplifying the intricate beauty of Proust’s imaginary universe.
