The Red Baron at Cosford Cinema
Europe, 1916. Baron Manfred von Richthofen is, at the age of just 24, the crack pilot of the German aerial combat forces — a legend in his own time, a hero at home and a man both feared and respected by the enemy. He and his fellow officers see their duels in the sky as tactical, almost sportsmanlike challenges that, at least at first, obscure their view of the horrors of the battlefields below. The provocative red paint job of his aircraft earns him the nickname The Red Baron and makes him famous the world over. The German high command increasingly misuses him for propaganda purposes — until the young pilot falls in love with Kate, a beautiful and resolute nurse who opens his eyes to the fact that there is more to war than dogfights won and adversaries downed. The film begins at 9pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. $8, ($6 seniors) cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.cosfordcinema.com

The Art Of The Steal At Cosford Cinema
In 1922, Dr. Albert C. Barnes formed a remarkable educational institution around his priceless collection of art, located just five miles outside of Philadelphia. Now, more than 50 years after Barnes’ death, a powerful group of moneyed interests have gone to court for control of the art, and intend to bring it to a new museum in Philadelphia. Standing in their way is a group of Barnes’ former students and his will, which contains strict instructions stating the Foundation should always be an educational institution, and that the paintings may never be removed. Will they succeed, or will a man’s will be broken and one of America’s greatest cultural monuments be destroyed? Sean Kenniff: Etre the Cow
Humiliated by his hoofed legs, the flies on his haunches, and the grass in his mouth, a bull named Etre tells his tender and thought-provoking story about the brutal insignificance of cow life at Gorwell Farm. In a world where the line between disgrace and dignity is drawn by a pasture fence, Etre finds himself alone in his awareness and utterly powerless to change his circumstances. The farmer and his men control everything — herding the cows from pasture to pasture, raising the sun in the morning, and taking it down at night. Etre searches for understanding among the broads, bulls, and calves on the pasture, but finds none. On the best of days, Etre listens to the farmer’s boy sing lullabies at the fence. He likes those songs and loves the boy. But the grasses thin as the seasons pass, the cows hunger, and Etre grows desperate. He is the only cow truly starving. Jana K. Lipman: Guantánamo
Guantánamo (University of California Press, 24.95) has become a symbol of what has gone wrong in the War on Terror. Yet Guantánamo is more than a U.S. naval base and prison in Cuba. It is a town, and our military occupation there has required more than soldiers and sailors — it has required workers. This revealing history of the women and men who worked on the U.S. naval base in Guantánamo Bay tells the story of U.S.-Cuban relations from a new perspective, and at the same time, shows how neocolonialism, empire, and revolution transformed the lives of everyday people. Drawing from rich oral histories and little-explored Cuban archives, Jana K. Lipman analyzes how the Cold War and the Cuban revolution made the naval base a place devoid of law and accountability. The result is a narrative filled with danger, intrigue, and exploitation throughout the twentieth century. Opening a new window onto the history of U.S. imperialism in the Caribbean and labor history in the region, her book tells how events in Guantánamo and the base created an ominous precedent likely to inform the functioning of U.S. military bases around the world. Jack Bowen: If You Can Read This
Long before blogs, tweets, and sound bites, people were telling the world how they felt in brief, blunt bursts of information plastered on the backs of their cars. Whether they’re political or religious, passionate or proud, controversial or corny, these brightly colored, boldly lettered mini manifestos are declarations of who we are, where we stand, and what we’d rather be doing. But as bestselling author and noted philosopher Jack Bowen reveals, there’s much more to the pop-culture phenomenon of bumper stickers than rolling one-liners and drive-by propaganda — no less, in fact, than a wise, funny, poignant, contentious, and truthful discourse on the human condition. Mixing pop culture with the ideas of historically prominent philosophers and scientists, If You Can Read This (Random House, $14) exposes the deeper wisdom couched behind these slogans — or, as need be, exposes where they have gone wrong. If you brake for big ideas, now’s the time. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

Law, Literature, And Therapeutic Jurisprudence
This book explores the affinity between the Law and Literature and Therapeutic Jurisprudence movements. Law and Literature focuses on the analysis and criticism of literary works that have legal themes, portray lawyers, or depict legal practice. It also employs techniques and theories of literary criticism to aid the interpretation of literary texts, particularly judicial decisions. Therapeutic Jurisprudence integrates psychology, mental health, and other related enterprises to enrich and shape the law. It seeks to humanize the law by concerning itself with the human, emotional, and psychological aspects of the legal process. Both interdisciplinary movements celebrate humanity, welcome moral and ethical justice, encourage story telling, and tutor us in the idiom of empathetic kindness. The five chapters of this book put Herman Melville, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Arthur Miller, W.H. Hudson, and other literary masters under a Therapeutic Jurisprudence lens and suggests that all of these literary masters are, at least implicitly, concerned with therapeutic justice.
