Mentor to artists like Dizzie Gillespie, Billie Holliday and Thelonius Monk, composer and pianist Mary Lou Williams is remembered as the first lady of jazz.
As part of the ongoing I Dream a Festival, Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Aaron Diehl heads to Miami Beach to perform music by Mary Lou Williams with his jazz trio and vocalist Carmen Lundy.
Contemplate the heavens with selections from Mary Lou Williams’ Mass and Zodiac Suite, an astrological journey that blurs the lines between jazz and classical music. Regarded as one of the most important works of sacred jazz, Mary Lou Williams’ Massis “an encyclopedia of Black music, richly represented from spirituals to bop to rock” (Newsweek).
These concerts are part of the ongoing jazz festival I Dream a World: Mary Lou’s Harlem. Other festival events include a relaxed family jazz concert and pay-what-you-wish chamber concert at the The Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater.
