GableStage Announces Auditions for its 26th Season

GableStage Theatre Company announces open auditions for actors interested in roles as part of their 2024/25 Season.

Auditions will take place on Friday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and again on Monday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at GableStage, 1200 Anastasia Avenue. This is a general, open call for equity and non-equity actors. Pre-registration is required. 5 minute audition slots available per actor. Click here to schedule your audition appointment.

Actors should come prepared with two contemporary monologues, one comedic and one dramatic, not longer than two minutes each.

GableStage is seeking child actors to play roles in the production of Appropriate by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. All young actors between the ages of 7-17 years old are encouraged to audition and should come prepared with a poem or short text.

Roles are available for GableStage productions of Appropriate and Fat Ham, as well as future productions. Roles in King James, Both Sides Now, and Summer 1976 have all been cast.

Video submissions will be accepted in the event you cannot attend one of the open audition days. All information must be submitted through the audition portal. Click here for virtual audition submissions.

  • Rhys Thurston (male, 16-20 years old) -Toni’s Son
  • Rachael Kramer-Lafayette (female, late 40s) – Bo’s Wife
  • Cassidy “Cassie” Kramer-Lafayette (female, 12-13 years old) – Bo and Rachael’s older child
  • Ainsley Kramer-Lafayette (male, 7-10 years old) – Bo and Rachael’s youngest child
  • Francois “Franz/Frank” Lafayette (male, late 30s early 40s) – Youngest sibling
  • River Rayner (female, early 20s but looks younger) – Fraciois’ fiance

Show Description:

Straight from Broadway, this darkly comic American drama by Pulitzer Finalist and Obie Award winner, Jacobs Jenkins, invites audiences to one helluva family reunion! It’s summer in Arkansas and the cicadas are singing. When the Lafayette family returns to their late patriarch’s home to manage the remains of his estate, things take a turn. When an estranged brother appears late one night and mysterious objects are discovered among the clutter, long-hidden secrets and buried resentments can no longer be contained and the family is forced to face the ghosts of their past. A Miami Premiere.

  • Opal (black, female, 19-20 years old) – is one of Juicy’s only friends. She loves Ham and worries about him. A kind of Ophelia.
  • Larry (black, male, 21-23 years old) – a boy that is attracted to Juicy. A marine. Trying to heal from PTSD. Has a secret. Awkward. A kind of Laertes
  • Rabby (black, female, 40-45 years old) – is Larry and Opal’s mother. Tedra’s friend. Semi churchy but honestly she just wanna drink and praise the Lord. A kind of Polonius
  • Pap (black, male, 45ish years old) – is the Ghost of Juicy’s father. Was in prison for killing someone cause their breath stank, ’til he got shanked on the way to dinner. A kind of Hamlet’s Father. Same actor as REV.
  • Tio (black or Afro-Latinx, 20-40 years old) – is clever. Juicy’s cousin. Oldest friend. A kind of Horatio.

Show Description:

Hamlet, but with more barbeque and disco. Swapping a Danish castle for a North Carolina BBQ pit, Fat Ham remakes Shakespeare’s story of murder and revenge into something hilarious and profound. Juicy, a Black queer Southern kid, has a lot on his plate already when his father’s ghost shows up, demanding vengeance. As generations clash at the family’s backyard barbeque, Juicy must face the legacies of violence he’s been raised with and shape the man he wants to be. Winner of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize. This historic three-way co-production is made possible through major funding from the Warten Foundation. A South Florida Premiere.
