ArtTable and ArtMiami Partner To Honor 20 Visual Arts Pioneers in South Florida

(Miami, FL – Oct 22, 2009)- Dr. Carol Damian, Director and Chief Curator of The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, is among 20 leading women to be honored by ArtTable at a brunch during ArtMiami.  The women being honored are a prestigious group of individuals who have created international acclaim for Miami’s art scene in the last two decades.
 
Dr. Carol Damian is a professor and former chairperson of FIU’s College of Art and Art History, before she opened the Frost Art Museum as Director and Chief Curator. Aside from being a strong advocate for Miami’s arts community and a nationally recognized art historian, She is known as an energetic scholar, who combines a passion for art with strong leadership skills. Damian has served as the curator of The Museum’s Permanent Collection since 2006.  She is the author of The Virgin of the Andes: Art and Ritual in Colonial Cuzco (Grassfield Press, 1995), and is the Miami correspondent for Art Nexus and Arte al Dia. She lectures frequently, and has served as curator of numerous exhibitions.
 
Art Miami is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year as the city’s longest running contemporary art fair and is considered to be one of the most important venues for modern and contemporary art in the U.S.  The fair takes place from December 2-6 in the midtown Miami Arts District, and will feature works from more than 80 national and international contemporary art galleries.  For additional information, visit www.art-miami.com.
 
ArtTable is the leadership organization for professional women in the visual arts. Founded in 1980 by established female arts professionals to foster greater support, recognition, and opportunities among women in the visual arts, the organization now consists of a network of 1,800 women as it approaches its 30th anniversary.
About The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum  at Florida International University
The Frost Art Museum opened its current 46,000-square-foot state of the art building in November, 2008. Over 25,000 people have visited The Museum in its new building since its opening. Admission to The Museum is always free. Currently on view at The Frost Art Museum, The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama, En Vista, and l a c u n a  i n  t e s t i m o n y.  The Frost is an AAM accredited museum and Smithsonian affiliate and is located at 10975 SW 17th St. across from the Blue garage and adjacent to the Wertheim Performing Arts Center on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday noon-5 p.m. Closed on Mondays and most legal holidays.
