Free Family Fest – A day of enchantment with Miami City Ballet’s Ballet for Young People program! March 9

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is proud to continue its fifth consecutive season of FAMILY FEST on March 9, 2013 with a Wonderland-themed installment celebrating the power of imagination and creativity through the performing arts. FAMILY FEST will feature an enchanting performance of George Balanchine’s The Steadfast Tin Soldier and Sir Frederick Ashton’s Les Patineurs (The Skating Party) by Miami City Ballet’s Ballet For Young People program in the Ziff Ballet Opera House. Outdoor activities and performances by local bands and dance troupes will take place at the Parker and Vann Thomson Plaza beginning at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Miami City Ballet performance at 2:00 p.m. Admission is FREE*, but First Access Passes are required for the indoor portion of the program.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m., families can engage in a fun-filled day of enchantment by participating in hands-on activities such as magic wand and pop-up ballerina making at the Creation Station, a “Book Nook” reading corner provided by Miami-Dade County’s Public Library System, face painting, balloon sculpting, and “Ballet for Kids” classes inside the Peacock Foundation Studio.

The fun moves indoors at 2:00 p.m. with a free performance by Miami City Ballet (MCB) in the Ziff Ballet Opera House. Miami City Ballet’s Ballet for Young People program brings the entire family together through dancing and fun. This year, MCB’s international dance stars perform George Balanchine’s delightful The Steadfast Tin Soldier and Sir Frederick Ashton’s enchanting Les Patineurs (The Skating Party). Based loosely on Han Christian Anderson’s tale, The Steadfast Tin Soldier recounts a sweet love story between a tin soldier and a pretty paper doll. The stage then transforms into an intimate skating pond surrounded by a winter wonderland in Les Patineurs…there is even snow! Audiences of all ages will leave with a smile on their face after experiencing the joy of these charming works.

Miami City Ballet is an international ensemble of more than 55 dancers, hailing from a diverse array of places including Cuba, Venezuela, China, Switzerland, France, Japan, and Germany. The company has an active repertoire of 88 ballets and performs over 100 times annually. Miami City Ballet is a resident company of the Adrienne Arsht Center and also regularly tours both domestically and internationally.
