As Tropical Storm Milton approaches, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is urging Floridians to take proactive steps to ensure their safety. The storm, expected to intensify over the Gulf of Mexico, could reach Florida’s west coast mid-week as a major hurricane, bringing life-threatening storm surge and heavy rainfall, particularly to areas still recovering from previous hurricanes Helene and Debby.
FEMA’s regional officials are on the ground in Florida, coordinating recovery efforts and preparing resources to support the state. Residents are reminded to heed local officials’ warnings and stay informed through local media channels.
“Now is the time to prepare,” said a FEMA spokesperson. They encourage downloading the FEMA app for real-time weather alerts and locating emergency shelters. More preparedness information is available at Ready.gov and Listo.gov.
Floridians are also encouraged to check on neighbors who may need assistance and have a communication plan in place. Mental health is a priority; those feeling overwhelmed can access confidential support by calling the Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990.
Key safety tips include keeping gas tanks at least half full, avoiding flooded areas, and staying clear of floodwaters, which can be hazardous due to electrical risks and contaminants. During power outages, residents should rely on flashlights rather than candles, and generators should always be used outdoors and away from windows.
As the storm approaches, FEMA emphasizes vigilance and community support in navigating this challenging time.
FEMA’s mission is helping people before, during and after disasters.
