The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale will showcase 3-D Pop Artist Charles Fazzino’s exhibition entitled “Faces of Fort Lauderdale” from Dec. 9, 2010-Jan. 9, 2011 (Lobby Section of the Museum). The exhibition celebrates the 2011 City of Fort Lauderdale Centennial Celebration and Charles Fazzino’s role as the Official Centennial Artist.
Charles Fazzino has become well known for the frenetic energy, bright colors, and great detail that infuse his enormously popular 3-D work. The “Faces of Fort Lauderdale” exhibit will feature his 3-D painting entitled “Ten Decades of Fort Lauderdale” that was commissioned by the Centennial Committee to commemorate the City’s one-hundredth anniversary. A Limited-Edition 3-D print and also Poster will available for purchase in the Museum Book Store/Café during the exhibition.
The exhibition will also include Charles Fazzino’s most recent work which both captures and celebrates the history of Fort Lauderdale.
- “Trash Can History” – A sculpture that boldly illustrates the tone of the 1950s, expressed through discarded items hastily left in a beach trash receptacle in the face of an oncoming hurricane.
- “The Fort Lauderdale Strip” – A large-scale sculptural relief representing Fort Lauderdale Beach during the 1980s.
- “Drive-In Fort Lauderdale” – A large-scale sculptural relief representing a drive-in movie theatre in 1960s Fort Lauderdale.
- “Fort Lauderdale Today” – A large, three-dimensional sculptured canvas acrylic painting representing present-day Fort Lauderdale.
- “Faces of Fort Lauderdale” – A collection of 10 multi-layered, Plexiglas sculptures that tell the story of everyday people, decade-by-decade, who made Fort Lauderdale what it is today. Among the featured characters are a Seminole Indian, a Cuban immigrant, a real estate developer, a navy woman who lost her fiancé in the Bermuda Triangle, a famous black jazz musician, a college girl from up north on spring break, a Jewish retiree from New York, a gay nightclub dancer, an Italian-American business entrepreneur, and a transplanted motorcycle dude/tattoo parlor shop owner.
Fazzino is the official artist for the upcoming Winterfest Boat Parade as well as Super Bowl XLV. Fazzino is currently working on completing his permanent installation at the American Airlines terminal at JFK International Airport. During his 30-year career, he has become acclaimed throughout the US, Europe and Asia for his 3-D pop art renderings of New York and countless other cities, as well as his vibrant and detailed tributes to popular icons such as the New York Yankees, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Alfred Hitchcock and the characters of Walt Disney. He has painted 11 Super Bowls for the National Football League, six All-Star Games for Major League Baseball, five Daytime Emmy Award ceremonies, two FIFA World Cup tournaments, the GRAMMY Awards, and is the official artist for the 2009 and 2010 President’s Council on Physical Fitness and The President’s Challenge.
Through his artwork, Fazzino has raised several million dollars for charitable causes such as Muscular Dystrophy Association, NECO, MS 150 Bike Tour, Alzheimer’s Association, Rosie O’Donnell’s For All Kids Foundation, and many more.
There have been five art books published about Fazzino’s art and career, and his first children’s’ book, Sam Katz: On the Loose was published by Random House in 2005. In 2009, he was a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
