MONICA & DAVID explores the marriage of two adults with Down syndrome and the family who supports their needs. Monica and David are blissfully in love and want what other adults have – an independent life. Full of humor, romance and everyday family drama, the film uses intimate fly-on-the wall footage to reveal the complexity of their story.The film has a storybook beginning with a young couple full of hope and laughter. By their side are two fearless mothers who realize a lifelong dream – a “normal” life for their adult children.
Born and raised in Miami, ALI CODINA makes her directorial and producing debut in Monica and David. She was recently named one of the “10 Filmmakers to Watch in 2009”, by The Independent. MONICA & DAVID had its world premiere in the First Appearance Competition at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam and won 2nd place for the Audience Award. Codina began working with Down syndrome adults 16 years ago at a social program for disabled adults with her cousin Monica, who stars in the movie.
