EVERY DAY IS EARTH DAY ON BRIGHTLINE, FLORIDA’S ECO-FRIENDLY TRAIN

Car-Alternative Brightline Takes 2.3 Million Cars Off the Road in 2025

Brightline, America’s leading provider of modern, eco friendly intercity rail, is honoring Earth Day by highlighting significant progress toward reducing carbon emissions, conserving natural resources, and building a cleaner, more connected future for Florida. From greener train technology to sustainable station design and smart mobility partnerships, Brightline continues to demonstrate that fast, convenient travel can also be environmentally responsible.

A Cleaner Way to Travel

Train travel on Brightline reduces CO₂ emissions by 75% per passenger mile compared to travel by personal vehicle. In 2025 alone, Brightline’s 3.1 million riders helped remove 2.3 million cars from Florida roads — avoiding 659,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually, the equivalent of planting more than 3 million trees.

Sustainable Facilities and On-Board Innovations

Brightline’s commitment to sustainability extends well beyond the tracks:

  • The fully automated train wash at Basecamp, the Orlando Vehicle Maintenance Facility, uses a mixture of 78% recycled water with collected rainwater.
  • Touchless water bottle refill stations have saved 618,154 plastic bottles to date — equal to 25,756 cases of water or enough bottles to stretch 85 miles, the distance from MiamiCentral to West Palm Beach.
  • Trains and stations feature touchless hygiene systems, including touchless flush and Dyson integrated faucet and dryer fixtures, reducing water use and eliminating up to 73,000 paper towels annually.
  • Orlando Station’s PREMIUM and SMART lounge ceilings are constructed from 100% recyclable and reusable felt PET materials.
  • The Aventura station was designed to meet LEED Gold criteria as specified by the US Green Building Council, featuring a solar canopy, a careful selection of materials to increase healthy indoor spaces and smart technology to reduce water use.
  • Mary Mary Bars use agave based straws, reducing single use plastics.
  • Recycling bins are available throughout stations, and Brightline teammates receive reusable tumblers to reduce plastic waste.

Cleaner, Smarter Train Technology

Brightline trains meet the highest emissions standards set by the EPA and are powered by biodiesel, a biodegradable, renewable fuel that significantly reduces air toxins, smog, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter compared to traditional diesel.

Each train is built in partnership with Siemens and powered by two locomotives equipped with 16 cylinder, 4,000 hp Cummins EPA Tier 4–compliant diesel electric engines, the highest level of certification for engine emissions.

Clean Mobility

Brightline expands sustainable travel options by supporting bike share, ride share, and electric scooters. Station locations in dense, walkable urban centers encourage mass transit use and reduce reliance on personal vehicles. Brightline is directly connected to Metrorail, Metrobus, Metromover, and local trolley systems, making multimodal travel seamless.

“Brightline was built on the belief that transportation can be both transformative and sustainable,” said Patrick Goddard, CEO of Brightline Florida. “This Earth Day, we’re proud to celebrate the measurable impact our guests and teams have made—and we remain committed to expanding clean mobility options for Florida and beyond.”
