DEERING ESTATE ANNOUNCES 2010 JURIED ARTSOBAY EXHIBIT IN COLLABORATION WITH LEGALART

The Deering Estate at Cutler in collaboration with LegalArt and Bernice Steinbaum congratulates emerging and contemporary artists Brian F. Call, Aurora Molina and Natalia Reparaz as exhibiting artists for the 2010 Juried ArtSoBay exhibition. This is our second open call, juried fine art exhibit held at the Deering Estate at Cutler as part of the two week long, SoBay Festival of the arts.  Over 270 submissions were reviewed by guest juror, Bernice Steinbaum and the Estate’s own Exhibits and Collections Committee.  Only three artists were chosen for this highly selective and competitive fine art show.  Artists chosen will showcase their contemporary art utilizing a variety of media that depict the soul of South Florida. The ArtSoBay exhibit opening is on Sunday, January 31st at 7:00 pm. The exhibit is on display from January 31st through March 5th and is open to the public during regular Estate hours.

Guest Juror – Bernice Steinbaum, Director Bernice Steinbaum Gallery: The Bernice Steinbaum Gallery first opened its doors in New York City in 1977. Considered a pioneer for galleries showcasing women artists and artists of color the gallery remained in New York City for 23 years. The Bernice Steinbaum Gallery moved the center of its operations to Miami, Florida in the year 2000. The gallery boasts representing two Macarthur “Genius” award winner; Pepon Osorio, and Deborah Willis, five Guggenheim, multiple National Endowment Winners, two Annenberg fellows, among other awards. In addition the gallery regularly organizes group shows which travel to various museum facilities, an unusual activity for a gallery which occurs primarily because of the director’s own academic art history background. Artist – Brian F. Call: Brian Call’s ultimate goal with photography is to encourage others to reconnect with our imperiled natural world. “We are losing wilderness areas at an alarming rate, and developing a greater sense of intimacy with the earth and its natural cycles is of critical importance. Hopefully my nature photography will contribute to inspiring this kind of emotional and spiritual connection that is so urgently needed.” For the artist bio and more information please visit www.briancallphotography.com.

Artist – Aurora Molina: “My work is concerned with the objectification of beauty, the growing anonymity of the elderly in our society, and the obsessiveness of blending in or fitting in the society’s gaze. I believe a clear connection exists between the media-fueled manipulation, edification and standardization of physical beauty and the increasing denial of the actual process of physical aging. To be old today is to slowly become invisible.  There’s an undeniably playful aspect to all of my work. The soft sculptural creatures I make are created as if they were belligerent, ill-behaved children, demanding attention. In the most recent series, I have created an environment where man has become and anthropoid-like creature and it is exclusively the animal instinct that drives his behavior.” For the artist bio and more information please visit www.auroramg.wordpress.com.

Artist – Natalia Reparaz: “If I had to define what a work of art is, I would say it is that creature

born from the marriage of an idea and a shape. I would say it is talent and skilled craftsmanship wrung together to express something in an interesting manner. The eye of the artist has that magic quality that can turn the most plain object into something worthy of contemplation.” For the artist bio and more information please visit www.nataliareparaz.com.
